The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

Alex, i cannot hep you here other than to suggest you post an enlarged in focus picture of the tang markings. Or post the tang markings by typing them out exactly as they appear on the tang. This might help those who are familiar with dating Kabar's (aka "KABAR", "KA-BAR", "KA 'BAR")

Like most tang stamps charts providing dates of use, there is controversy over their accuracy, so consider them approximate.

KA-BAR over U.S.A. would be after 1952, when Union Cutlery changed its name to KA-BAR, but before Cole National (who bought the company in 1965) started putting model numbers on their knives in 1969. My guess is pre-1960.

Gunsil may be able to pin the date range down a little tighter and provide the specific model number.

Just to clarify a little. The KA-BAR over USA mark was used from either 1947 or 1948 until 1952. When the name changed from Union Cut Co to KA-BAR Inc the mark changed from KA-BAR over USA to Kabar. I cannot tell you the model number, catalogs from that era are scarce and I have none for reference.
