Re: AG RUSSEL - WHARNCLIFFE deal
I got mine today. I'll let John do his review when he gets his but I'll just say that it's every bit as nice as the first one I owned in 2011. Strong pull. Great snap. Great F&F.

RIck, Beautiful. Thanks for showing the backspring/ blade runup or whatever it’s called. That’s a tight fit. I love that.

That's encouraging Rick. Tracking is telling me mine should be here tomorrow or Saturday. Really looking forward to this one (just like all the rest ) I also have a Camillus 14 due on one of those two days.

Does anyone have knowledge of the the original pricing of these AGR knives. Meaning when they were first offered in the AGR catalog?

Re: AG RUSSEL - WHARNCLIFFE deal
Jerry mentioned on the first page of this thread that they sold for $60. I bought one in 2011 but I must have removed it from my spreadsheet when I passed it on.Quick Steel wrote:Does anyone have knowledge of the the original pricing of these AGR knives. I did find an A.G. Russell Sowbelly Trapper on my spreadsheet that I bought on 3/1/11. That was a large two blade knife and I paid $64.95 at that time.

Re: AG RUSSEL - WHARNCLIFFE deal
Thanks Railsplitter.
Re: AG RUSSEL - WHARNCLIFFE deal
Received mine & have to say I'm disappointed. Blade fit and snap is fine. Issue is the bone sides have lifted - would never see a current production Case come through like this ... and presumably this AGR knife had the same price point as a Case knife when they came out a few years ago. Maybe I just got a lemon, but if I paid $60 a few years ago for this knife, it would have gone back immediately...
I'm going to keep it & maybe try and put some new sides on it someday ... it sure does have one honkin big wharncliffe on a relatively small frame.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have taken a very old handle pattern and added a Wharncliffe blade made as the original designer intended. The blade measures fifty percent thicker than most other Wharncliffe blades and tapers to the edge and to the point. With a straight cutting edge and a needle point, the Wharncliffe blade works beautifully for digging a splinter out of your finger, cutting an article from the newspaper or making a fuzz stick.
Using the same handle, we have inserted a second style blade, our zulu spear patterned after a 1920s Schrade blade; basically a droppoint with a strong cut swedge to which we have added a double pull. As with all our slip joint folders, before putting this knife into production, the prototypes were mechanically opened and closed over 300,000 times. I do not want you to ever have to experience a broken spring.
The blades, at just under 3" (a legal length nearly anywhere), are Swedish 12C27 stainless at 56-58 Rc. with a satin finish. The bolsters, liners and Norman shield are all of 400 series stainless steel. Today, the knives are available in only smooth white bone and amber jigged bone. If our customers like the knife, you will be seeing it in other handle materials. This knife is designed for pocket carry so we have not designed a belt pouch for it. Measures just 3-5/8" closed and weighs 2.9 oz. Made in China.
Re: AG RUSSEL - WHARNCLIFFE deal
I posted this in Mail Call yesterday but I think it also belongs here.........
My A.G.Russell Curved Regular Jack came yesterday. Someone else commented that he thought these might be 2nds and I'm of a mind to agree with him. It's a fairly nice knife but it has a couple or three "defects". Nothing terribly awful but defects just the same. Sorry to be nit picky but just not perfect.
#1, a notch in the liner. #2 Liner stands slightly proud of the handle. #3 Space between the liner and the back spring.
Re: AG RUSSEL - WHARNCLIFFE deal
I’ve seen these and other defects in other brands of knives. I think it comes down to how strict QC is.
Re: AG RUSSEL - WHARNCLIFFE deal
I dearly wish I had found this thread much sooner.
Note to self; spend more time on AAPK!!
For those of you that do not know me, I work for AG Russell Knives.
Some facts about how we ensure our quality for our customers:
All knives are inspected 100% at our facility here in Rogers Arkansas.
The knives that pass our inspection regimen are the knives you buy from us.
Knives that fail our inspection for a small aesthetic feature (small gap or crack in bone handle etc) are notched in the tang and sold by us as Seconds.
Knives that fail our inspection for major issues are destroyed by us.
All knives we sell (including seconds) will always be in the original AG Russell packaging.
We NEVER sell rejects (or any knives for that matter) to resellers or dealers. EVER!
I am afraid you have been purchasing Pirated knives from this seller.
Needless to say I would like to chat with the seller to try to learn how these knives made it into the US.
Sadly the eBay listings are long gone.
Did these knives ship to you from the US or overseas?
I would be very grateful if one of you would share the sellers eBay username or contact information with me.
A.G. Russell devoted his life to ensuring the High Quality of his knives.
We intend to stay on A.G.s’ path.
I do not believe these are "counterfeit" knives.
More likely defective knives that somehow leaked out of the Chinese Factory IMHO.
If I discover more I will share it here.
Yes and i think it is common place and they get sold in bulk lots. But where ? There obviously are some USA ebay sellers who know.
Maybe on Alibaba ?
Re: AG RUSSEL - WHARNCLIFFE deal
I would certainly bet they are. Lots of little clues: 1) Both sellers are in New York state, and the cities they list are about an hour apart. 2) Both sellers have a variety of "thrint/antique/junk store" items - and then there are a couple of these knife listings. 3) Price is less than half what they originally sold for, yet they are listed as "New, Old Stock". 4) The pictures look to be stock art, not a picture of the actual knife you will receive.
