Artisan Zumwalt

Post by Caseman601225 »

I just won this Artisan Zumwalt so I thought I’d add my 2 cents. I actually posted this as a reply to an older thread then decided to double dip. Sorry. :D Id never heard of the brand until I was notified that I’d won so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Titanium frame lock anodized a nice green. It’s a big knife, with about 3.8” of M390 blade, riding on 2 rows of captured ceramic bearings. It’s smooth as silk, and centered perfectly. The weight is right at 5 1/2 oz, so it’s a bear, but I don’t find it objectionably heavy. Absolutely no blade play when opened. The lockup is MAYBE a touch early, though I’d say it’s fine. There’s a steel insert on the locking liner since I’d guess Ti would wear.

Over all I like it a lot. I like a big knife, and this qualifies. OAL open is a shade under 9”. This is my first M390 blade. I’ve certainly read great things about the steel, but I don’t mind sharpening a knife, and I don’t have the disposable income to regularly plop down premium prices, so this will be a new experience. I will say that, despite the premium materials, the knife isn’t cheap. This version retails north of $200 from what I’ve been able to find. They do offer the same knife in D2 with G10 for $50-$60. The grinds are even, though I think they could’ve started the grind nearer the spine and made it a better slicer. Time will tell if I’m right.

Personally, if I were buying and was going to go 2 Ben Franklins on a knife it would likely not be a Chinese knife, but that’s just me. A BM 940 in S35V is, I believe, less than this. But I can’t knock the build. It’s a tank. Thanks for letting me jump in.

There really are. Again though, for the money, I’d buy a BM or other USA made brand. But as to fit and finish, this appears to be the equal to any other knife I’ve owned.
