Original or?

In 1911, H. N. Platts, was able to draw on his extensive friendships and family connections in the cutlery world to start Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing of Boulder Colorado. At first only a jobbing business, by 1920 construction and machinery purchases were underway to begin manufacture of knives. Through name changes--to Western States Cutlery Co. in 1953, then Western Cutlery Co. in 1956--and moves first across town and later to Longmont Colorado, the company stayed under the leadership of the Platt family until 1984. In that year, the company was sold to Coleman, becoming Coleman-Western. Eventually purchased by Camillus in 1991, Western continued until Camillus expired in 2007.

Original or?

Post by hardman »

I recently picked up this Western fixed blade Scout knife. The seller said it was an L66. I know that it is, in fact, a Western because it has the split tang. That said, the only Western Scout Fixed Blades I have seen have stacked leather handles. Yet the Stag on this knife appears to my eyes to be original. So, I thought I would post it here to see if any Western Experts might offer an opinion on its authenticity. I don't have a lot invested in it, so feel free to be critical. At worst, I have a great belt friendly user.

It looks like an H48 to me. I don't know if the H48 was ever issued as a Scout knife though.

Interesting.

Probably by one of the doing all kinds of strange rehandles. Not Orvet's work - he etches his info on the blades of knives he reworks.
