The Preacher & the Piano Player - a true story

Post by wizrd »

A young boy, of around 5 years old, about forty years ago, was growing up in a household with 3 men, one was his Grandfather, and two Uncles, both of the Uncles, in their early twenties, had just returned home from serving their country during the Viet Nam era.

In their home was an old upright piano that had never seen a lot of use, but the Grandfather & the uncle's could both play a little, and they tried to encourage the young boy to become more interested in learning the piano. They would, when they had time, teach the boy, David, some scales & some simple melodys so he could amuse himself at his leisure, never making it a thing where 'you're just gonna practice, whether you like it or not'. They would tell him that with some practice, he could be a good enough piano player to entertain his friends, play songs that he liked, and maybe even get good enough at playing the piano to play in a band someday. They also told him some other things to influence his pursuit of music.

One day, they noticed the piano didn't sound all that good anymore, and decided to have it tuned up and any repairs made to it that were needed. A local church Pastor was well-known in the area as a very good piano repair person, so they asked him to come and work his magic on this old piano of theirs. After two days of replacing some strings and several felt pads and some minor adjustments, the Preacher said the piano was 'as good as it's gonna be', he played a few numbers on it, and turned to the young boy, David, and said, "Would you like to try it out? I hear you play some yourself."

David sits at the piano, and plays a few bars of 'Twinle, twinkle little star' and a little bit of the 'Happy Birthday Song', and the Preacher is quite impressed. "That's quite good", says the Preacher, "Do you want to be a concert pianist when you grow up?" David replies, " No, I don't think so, I just want to be a piano player in a cathouse." We all cracked up. The moral of this story is - 'Be careful what you tell young children.' True story.
