Post by galvanic1882 »

Just got the knife on the bottom. I’ve had the other one a few years always look for more of these. I’ll buy any I can find, Mike

Who makes them Mike? Do they have a proper name? Maybe sliding cover auto or something like that. How old are they? Looks sort of like a miniature mousetrap spring.

You have the knack of finding the odd pieces of knife history that are uniquely awesome. Thanks for posting these! ::tu:: ::tu::

Here is what I know about them from Doug Growitz’s book.

Mike the blade end of the box looks to be open so it would seem the blade would have a lot of wobble when the blade is deployed. When you slide the box shut does it slide against the blade to help keep it rigid? Is there much wobble?

Here is a 10 minute video of Growitz showing various autos. He doesn’t show any sliding box ones but at 5:30 minutes he shows a Miller Bros. ring turn auto I’ve never seen before.

Thanks Dennis good question. The top knife has no wobble at all but the bottom knife does, been used where I think the top knife has not had much use at all.

Very cool little knives Mike.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

So the larger ones are 3 1/8" closed and the smaller one I just got is 2 1/2" closed.

So to open these, you pull that lid cover back and the blade springs out sideways? Interesting. Seems like it would require two hands to open and close.

Yes that's how they open. It's a bit tricky but I have done it with one hand but 2 works best.
