MY Praise fot the Kershaw Skyline

Kershaw began its foray into the knife business sometime during 1974. The company was originally based in Portland Oregon, but most early knives were manufactured in Japan. The first US manufacturing plant was opened in 1997 & the company currently offers knives made in the U.S., Japan, & China. Pete Kershaw (an ex Gerber salesman) started the business.

MY Praise fot the Kershaw Skyline

Post by miklobe »

IMHO the Kershaw Skyline comes very close to being the PERFECT EDC. For me It would be perfect if/when I can master the flipper deployment, so that it works 100% of the time. [I have no picture to present; maybe someone else can furnish pics. Thanks.]

Just so happens I've been browsing some of the Kershaw dealer's inventory lately. Got interested in learning more about them after a member in another forum posted some of his.
On sites that feature customer reviews, several people mention difficulty of deployment which would seem contradictory to the very principle of an assisted opener. Already decided I needed to visit a retailer and handle a few before picking one out online.
I didn't have the skyline on my short list but will add it since you
like it enough to jump start a thread.
I hate to venture forth w/preconceived notions, but I have a feeling they might have trouble surpassing the good ole USA Schrade SW7S. I could be wrong tho, it has happened before. 8)

I might have to find a Kershaw I like here soon and pick one up, if only to play with the steel. Kershaw has migrated most of their blades from 13C26 to 14C28N. of course, since sandvik made it just for them, they are being pretty tight lipped about the actual properties of the steel, but I know that sandvik's 19c27 is effectively 440C. The N intrigues me, for sure. Usually that means Nitrogen has been added to the steel, and in some places (H1, for example) makes a huge boost to corrosion resistance, and actually allows for work hardening (I.e. the act of sharpening and cutting actually makes the steel at the edge harder)

I have been a Kershaw fan for 25 years!
Some of the best user knives on the market today IMO!
Their warranty is excellent as well.

Here is a link to the Kershaw site's page for the Skyline in case anyone wants to see one or read the particulars on it.

Well I finally decided to try a Scallion as my first Kershaw onion knife.
After preliminary inspection, I believe my suspicion that a chive might be too small was correct.
Hard enough to stay out of the blade travel plane w/the scallion size handle (3.5")
Decided on the bluluminum, almost got redluminum.
I see what ya'll mean about sharp sharp right out of the box, yessuhreebob.
Pocket clip too tight of a grip, might just take it off.
Schrade Switchit clip works a lot smoother going in or out.

The Skyline and the Scallion both look like potential buys...but right know this is the only Kershaw that I own. 8)

Well Johnnie, if I have to guess I'll pick
that it's a Centofante/Unyun.
Think it would work in the wharncliffe thread too.

Far as i can tell, looks like the Centofante is discontinued.
Still see some on a few Kershaw dealer's sites. One has the signatured handles version on sale for $32.95 but I think I like the red handles mo' better. Decisions decisions....

Ya'll have hit my weak spot. My obsession with Kershaw knives knows no bounds.

FWIW, the Skyline is not an assisted opening knife. Just has a flipper.
It is different than other flippers and might take some time getting used to it. (very light folder)

The Skyline was designed by Tommie Lucas, an in-house designer at Kershaw.
He is currently working as a designer for the Zero Tolerance line as well.

Since SHOT is currently in full swing there have been many new introductions to the Kershaw and ZT line. ::tu::

As for the Centofante line, I have a few. :D
