Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
tocrawfo, you like Benchmade knives !
I have a question regarding "Griptilian":
i see many different Benchmades all called "Griptilian" even though blade profiles & handle shapes are all different from each other. Locking mechanisms might be different as well ?
Usually a knife name refers to a specific design the only variable being the type of handle covers.
So what does "Griptilian" actually refer to ?

Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
Griptilian referes to the particular family of knives in the benchmade line.
There is a griptilian and mini griptilian model line from Benchmade.
In the griptilian line they offer several different blade shapes and designs. Sheepsfoot. drop point, tanto and the dough ritter version which is the one I have.
The handles are the same shape across the different griptilian models. A lot of them come standard with the nylon type handles. The newer versions do come in g10 scales. The ones I have are custom made scales.
All of the griptilians have the Benchmade Axis lock mechanism. One of the best on any folding knives.
The griptilian is benchmades most popular line so there are a lot of them out there.
The benchmade website you can custom design your knife with patterns etched on the blade. Several color variations in the handle and even blade color along with a variety of different types of steel.

From my father-in-law's collection. It's amazing how much I've grown to appreciate knives in researching his collection. It's also pretty amazing how there are so many subtle differences that can actually make a huge difference in quality/price.

Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
Been a Bench made fan since the very early 90s, my first 2 BMs were the AFO and the Mini Reflex both bought in Oregon while on business, I found out it was legal to buy there and I wanted a quality auto instead of the cheap pick locks I had. I still have them both, they're the only 2 autos I have from BM, one of these days I'd like to get a few of the older autos that you could only get from them back then.
Not to long after I was back teaching a class and I had the opportunity to go to a Cutlery Shoppe B&M and brought home the 730 Ares with the new Axis lock home on the plane with me. Nearly 20 years later the last BMW I bought was a full size Griptillian, I had to try one after all the hype, first thing I did was sand down that aggressive checkering to save my pockets. After that It's everything they said, substantially less $ than the 730 Ares but a great pattern.

My one and only. Could anybody tell me what model I have? Thank you.
Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
Nevermind...I noticed the number 10400 under the flutterby on the blade. It's a Pika!specgrade wrote:My one and only. Could anybody tell me what model I have? Thank you.
Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
Here's my Bechmade Casbah AUTO (4400SBK-1, 3.4" Black S30V Drop Point Combo Blade, Blue Textured Grivory Handle). My wife knows I love benchmade's and got this for me as a gift.
Auto's aren't my thing so I've got this for sale here on the AAPK store (Sswingle's Store). Don't tell my wife!

Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
Picked this up last week, I think I found a new EDC. Love this knife- the traditional flavor is the appeal .
Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
Nice. Is that the Summit Lake? I was tempted to get one of those awhile back. I'm going to wait until closer to Christmas for hopefully some sales and pick up another BM knife of some-such. I want to check out the Valet or maybe get another 940 variant. Gosh this is really getting bloody expensive.Oldredbone67 wrote:Picked this up last week, I think I found a new EDC. Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
Yes it is the small summit lake. Discontinued. It is a great "gentleman's carry" or just a very stylish EDC. Even though it is part of the "HUNT LINE" of knives. The Dynowood handles make it special. S30v steel , and that traditional look with the lockback sold me on it.
Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
My one and only Benchmade - a 42. Great flipper. I was disappointed when they stopped making them.

Re: SHARE YOUR BENCHMADES
My every day carry for when I am doing chores. A model 581 with big fat handles for a solid grip when cutting hard stuff with the four inch blade of M390.
For shopping and public outings I carry a slim, smaller knife.
Really happy with this knife.
