Avatars

Post by Railsplitter »

The new forum upgrade allows for larger avatars if anyone is interested. I changed mine from 125 x 93 pixels to 250 x 186 pixels.

It worked despite the fact that the size limit is still listed at 125 x 125 pixels.

Just a heads up if anybody wants a larger avatar.

Heeeeeeey!!!!! I did it!!! ::ds:: Took 2-hrs. of my life time but I did it.

For others who wish to change their avatar and have no idea how it works, this is my short summary. Please feel free to correct me or add to what I write here.

1 ) First off, you need a small picture of I think it was 48-KB or less.

This means you have to edit a picture by cutting it down to the right size. I tried it with a few pictures I had already taken but it didn't work because you naturally try to take good pictures which to me means kind of close up without to much background. Unfortunately I couldn't reduce these pictures down far enough in size to get them to work without cutting away essential parts of the photo.

So, what you do is, take a picture with too much background, then you can edit the picture by cutting away the excess background, which reduces it's size so that it fits as an avatar. Be sure to take 3-5 pictures from different distances so that you can experiment around untill you get what you like reduced down to the size you need.

The Case sharpening stone in my new avatar has approximately the diameter of a coke can. Behind it is a small Maryland state flag. I took pictures from between 2-feet and 4-feet in distance. Not sure which one of those worked but one of them worked just fine. ::tu::

2 ) Then click your user name (for example TPK)
3 ) Then click "User Control Panel"
4 ) Then click "Profile"
5 ) Then click "Edit avatar"
6 ) Then click I think it was next to "Avatar type:" the arrow that opens a little scroll box
7 ) Here you may chose between "Gallery avatar" (where you may chose an avatar from the AAPK) or...
"Upload avatar" (where you can chose one of your own pictures from your files).
8 ) Then proceed like you would when uploading any other picture on the AAPK.
9 ) If the picture does not meet the requirements, there will be a script that tells you to many pixels or to many KB.
10 ) Reduce the picture size again & again, untill it can be uploaded successfuly. That's it.

This may sound a bit complicated but it's really not that hard.
It's just...,
1 ) take a picture,
2 ) reduce it's size,
3 ) try to upload it,
4 ) repeat untill successful. ::handshake::

Hope this helps & like I said, feel free to correct me if I left out anything or screwed anything up. ::tu::

Have a great Sunday everyone, ::super_happy::
Tom

P.S.
Please don't ask me any questions. ::shrug:: I have tried this before and was unsuccessful so I just took an AAPK avatar. Today I tried it again and I was successful because I figured out how to reduce the picture sizes on my Tablet. That's all I know.

P.S.-P.S.
I'm sooooooooo Happy with my new avatar picture!!! Thanks Rick / Railsplitter!!!

Good job Tom. As Rick mentioned, the max size for an avatar is no longer 125 pixels X 125 pixels. The max size is now "The avatar’s filesize must be between 0 and 48 KiB."

If you don't have an image manipulating program such as PhotoScape (free), Photoshop ($$$) or Gimp (free), Microsoft Paint will do the trick for you and has been included with Microsoft operating systems for years. Apple users, you're on your own cause I don't know diddly about Apple products.

Your old avatar was probably really small to start with and didn't have a sufficient number of pixels to make it clear after enlarging.

I like your new avatar. Betty Boop is HOT.
