Independence Day

In 1939 Joseph Gerber (advertising agency owner) had custom knife maker David Murphy make 24 sets of carving knife for some of his select customers. Catalog retailer Abercrombie & Fitch saw them and was so impressed with the quality of the knives they wanted to sell them. Thus was born Gerber Legendary Blades.

Independence Day

Post by MUD »

Here's a little something I found awhile back.
This is exactly the way I bought them. Came with 12 other various sets and an empty two tier box. Got a heckuvadeal on the whole shebang. Around $8 a box!!

I figured it was a great day to show them off.

Thank y'all.
There was another truncated set in with the group. A 1947 set in the same condition as these. To me both look unused and brand new except for the bit of patina. Asked the gentleman I got them from. He said he couldn't remember where or when he got them. I believe him, he looked like he could've been at the Last Supper.

Case, I'll be giving you and a few more folks that know alot about Gerber. I'd post them but wanna know they're legit.

Here's one that I had to rebuild. One end was off, the other loose. The velvet was all kinds of messed up but the cutlery was perfect (like most of the boxes in the group).

I had the black fleece so I figured why not. Sanded the walnut ends down to wood (no stripper just muscle and paper), shot a couple of coats of lacquer (8-9. can't remember. If you've ever used lacquer you know why), cleaned and buffed the aluminum, reglued the ends and....
