Gerber Mk II 1967 Fighting knife

In 1939 Joseph Gerber (advertising agency owner) had custom knife maker David Murphy make 24 sets of carving knife for some of his select customers. Catalog retailer Abercrombie & Fitch saw them and was so impressed with the quality of the knives they wanted to sell them. Thus was born Gerber Legendary Blades.

Gerber Mk II 1967 Fighting knife

Post by MohawkMan61 »

So I've actually had this knife for awhile, a friend of mine gave it to me along with a couple of bayonets, she got them from a Vietnam Vet. It's a Gerber Mark 2 Combat knife serial number 003231 which puts it in that 2nd series of 2750 produced, last of the 5 degree angle blades. Original right hand sheath. It's got a few issues, chips to the steel grip and some pitting to the blade but otherwise it's a true survivor. The provenance for in - country combat use is inferred because of his Veteran status but I got no war stories to pass on with it. Definitely a cool blade.

If I were you, I wouldn't get my hopes up for a knife that was bloodied. Lots of guys who never saw a lick of combat bought knives like that or similar to it. Two guys in my hooch had Randall knives. Carried them the entire time I was there and our tour was as peaceful as a tour on Okinawa.

Nice Mark II. I get the impression a lot of guys don't care if the knife was bloodied as long as you have the provenance to prove it was there.

Agreed Jerry, I'm not sure that I'm that blood thirsty to care. I'm an old Gunner's Mate and was quite satisfied to have fired my 5 inch 45's from a distance!

Hey Shipmate! My first ship was 3 inch 50's which made all kind of sense since I went to school for 45's and 54's
