How About a Pal Cutlery Thread?

I have one Pal Cutlery Co. knife, this little pen. I think it has had the main blade reshaped, perhaps after being broken. Otherwise, it's in pretty good shape for a knife that is at least 56 years old. There is a nicer one for sale in one of the AAPK shops, the same pattern as this one. One thing that impresses me about this Pal is how clean and deep the tang stamp is.

I have heard that Pals were very common in earlier years, but evidently they don't command too much interest among collectors. Even so, I'll bet AAPK members have many of these knives put away. So how about showing off your Pals, along with any background or history you may know. About all I know is that they made a lot of knives for the military during the war, then shifted back to civilian production afterward and managed to hang on until 1953. Also, they owned the Remington tooling and had rights to the Remington name at one time.

I mean is the master stamped Pal Blade Co.?
Many of the Pal Blade knives made or produced during the WWII years are Remington patterns or have Remington parts. When you find a Pal Blade Co. knife, just look through a Remington catalog and you will usually find the pattern.
To me, it appeared the master blades got fatter as they became Pal Cutlery.
After awhile,they got their own blade style.

Yes, it is tang stamped Pal Blade Co.......I know what you mean,it looks like a RS3333.
Heres a pic of one of my Remingtons .

The second pic is another RS3333 that I have ..It looks exactly like the Pal...same long screw driver/bottle opener blade.

Here are my only 2 PAL knives. I am somewhat partial to them, as my grandfather worked for PAL Blade in the late 40's to early 50's. Unfortunately, he died in 1951, 6 months before I was born.

I have a few Pal Knives, both Pal Blade and Pal Cut Co.

A Pal Blade Co jack with celluloid handles.

A Pal Cut Co Camper.

A nice Pal Cut Co jack with bone handles.

An easy open Pal Blade Co jack.

A rare military bone handled Pal Blade Co TL-29.
c. early WWII ore even pre-war.

I spoke with Mike Silvey at the OKCA show this year and confirmed that these were made on a military contact.

Let's see more PALs!
I will have to dig out 1 or 2 of the military PALs I have and scan them.
The ones with Rogers Bone are beautiful knives!

I made a trip to the local flea market this morning and came away with two PAL camper knives. $5 each. Never sharpened, carried or used. Some kind of jigged composition scales but very nice knives. Blade etch says PERMEDGE NO. 0000. Tang stamp says PAL CUTLERY CO. in an arch and below that MADE IN USA.

From what I understand, this company went out of business in 1953 or before?

My book says..and I quote.."The Pal Cutlery Co, went out of business in the early years of 1950'".....I'm sure someone else will know the exact date...53 could be right.

Thanks Johnnie. Those knives are probably as old as I am What's a good book to own to look up general informaton on American knife makers? PAL is one I'm not familiar with.

Mine is a a Sargents 3rd edition "1992"...I really need to update my source's. ...Goin's Encyclopedia of Knife Markings is a good one to have.
Pal bought out Remington in 1939....I only have a handful of Pals.Most of my scouts are Remingtons.
Those 2 are in fantastic condition...good find and price.

Here's a PAL RH37 that went through the Pacific Island campaign with a SEABEE. He was killed in 1952. His brother willed it to me when he died.

johnnie, I like that too. I'm thinking the proper name for the other one is a "cattleman", and could we call the one with the punch blade a "harness jack"? What are your thoughts on that? thanks.

Joe...I belive that I would call them both Cattlemans...just one with a punch blade.
Harness Jack to me is a 2 blade jack,one blade being a punch.Both blades would be at the same end....This is my terminology others may vary.

I think I agree with Johnnie a true jack has 2 blades same end of the knife.
