Handles -- Bone or Delrin®
Using magnification, look for haversian canals (the little dark spots that were blood and nerve vessels in the bone).
A handy little 45X microscope for about two bucks on eBay (works very well).
Forged on the anvil of discipline.

Thanks for re-posting this. I’ve seen it previously and it’s helped me a lot when looking at knife handles.
And I have that exact same microscope, it’s relatively inexpensive and works really well.

I also use a 40x magnifying glass when sharpening, really useful for seeing progression and grind.
