Custom slipjoints: milled integral vs soldered bolsters?

Post by jkf96a »

OK all you pocket knife folks. On a custom slipjoint, do you prefer soldered bolsters, spot welded, or milled integral? Is that even a factor you look at when deciding to make a purchase?

Personally can’t say I’ve ever thought of it. I guess to me it would depend on the material used was. Stainless I would say milled. Brass milled like a Buck is good but ,I like the look of brass liners and nickel silver bolsters which would need solder.

Milled integral is my first choice but soldered wouldn't be a deal breaker if I liked the knife otherwise.

Looking back on the half dozen or so custom slip joints that I've owned, I don't recall ever owning anything but milled integral.

For me (I buy very few customs, though I do have a few) that’s not something I typically look for. I buy mostly on appearance, the reputation of the maker, and of course the price is a factor also.

I’m with Rick, I’d favor milled from brass like the old 110s.

In fact, I have a dream to someday build my own slipjoint knife from scratch, and I’d mill the liners on my antique horizontal milling machine.

So far it’s just in the dream stage, but it has a better chance of coming true than some of my other dreams…

All it would take is me getting off my lazy a$$…

I am good with either one.
I have made and added bolsters to a few knives, and I prefer them soldered on, though I have pinned them on as well.
