It might be helpful if you can post pictures of the whole knife and any markings from it. From what I see in your picture that knife was made long before Great Eastern Cutlery existed. (GEC was founded in 2006). Goins’ Encyclopedia lists several markings or firms using the word Eastern in the name. S.H. Eastern Cutlery g 1875-1900, O*K Eastern Cutlery Co. g 1875-1900, Eastern Cutlery Co. g 1875-1900, Eastern China Co. c 1921, Eastern Shear Co. Boston Mass. g 1890-1910.

He shows none stamped simply “Eastern”. It should be noted that the author says the italicized g used before dates means for these knives/makers he was unable to find information and these are his best estimates using clues such as style or pattern, materials, construction, and manufacturing methods used.

By the look of the build of the knife, it looked like it should have “middle” stamped above the eastern.

:lol: Good one! ::tu::

One detail about that stamp is bothering me...The orientation looks upside down...I'm trying to think if I've ever seen a tang stamp with the top next to the bolster and the bottom closer to the blade. ::hmm::

Upside down tang stamps are rare but they’re not unheard of either, especially on older knives. Modern automated manufacturing has made them less common. I have a few that I’m sure are legitimate knives. Somewhere here on AAPK there is at least one thread on the topic, with examples.
