Unusual Geo. Schrade Wire Knife

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Unusual Geo. Schrade Wire Knife

A friend recently gave me one of the old Geo. Schrade wite knives and while I have a few of them, this one has a brass blade. I’m wondering if it might have been a prototype. I can’t think of any good reason for a brass blade except that it might have been an easy way to make a blade that’s just for show. Does anyone have any knowledge about this?

Good info! I thought it was brass, but it does look like copper.

Hi guys,
FYI those copper blades were made of Beryllium Copper. It was also used to make the springs in automatic knives. Beryllium dust is a known carcinogen and causes damage to lungs, liver and kidneys. It's safe in solid state. Blades of Beryllium Copper and Brass were used in the blasting field as they didn't spark causing an accidental explosion."

Not for dynamite which will just burn slowly if lit on fire. Dynamite is very stable stuff, it takes a strong explosion like from a blasting cap to make dynamite explode. A spark will not ignite it nor will a bullet like in the western movies. There are dynamite knives which have a crimper for crimping blasting caps but the blade and/or reamer for making the blasting cap hole are steel.

We had a beryllium pry bar floating around our shop when I was in Iraq. I really wanted to take it when we left, but honor got in the way.

Neat knife!
