newbie wants help identifying knife

In 1911, H. N. Platts, was able to draw on his extensive friendships and family connections in the cutlery world to start Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing of Boulder Colorado. At first only a jobbing business, by 1920 construction and machinery purchases were underway to begin manufacture of knives. Through name changes--to Western States Cutlery Co. in 1953, then Western Cutlery Co. in 1956--and moves first across town and later to Longmont Colorado, the company stayed under the leadership of the Platt family until 1984. In that year, the company was sold to Coleman, becoming Coleman-Western. Eventually purchased by Camillus in 1991, Western continued until Camillus expired in 2007.

newbie wants help identifying knife

Post by feklar »

Hello everyone, newbie here found this knife and would like help identifying it and approximate age. It came in a leather sheath which fits nicely but the security snap isn't large enough diameter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That looks like a nice old hunter. The stamp looks like it was made between 1928 and 1950. It sounds like the sheath is not original to the knife.

🤔 That's not a Boy Scout knife without the etch is it?

John, all the BSA Western knives I have feature deeply stamped BSA logos rather than etched logos. I'm sure Wayne (zzzygoten) will be along with a positive ID.

Welcome to AAPK! I’m not sure about the date of your knife or model # .Does your knife have a model # stamped on the guard ? That might help narrow down the age range.

I had one of these a buddy of mine gave me that he found in an old motor home he bought and resold. I sold the knife on Ebay. I needed the money at the time. Mine hast the original sheath but looked very similar. I’ll see if I can locate a picture.

Somehow, I missed this one. Sorry about that.

Yes this is a post-WW2 46-5. Technically, it is a G46-5, since Western didn't change the model number to L46-5 until 1955, when they started putting model numbers on the pile side ricasso.

Since it has a reference to the bifurcated tang patent and MADE IN U.S.A. on the mark side, it was made between 1947 and 1953.

It COULD be a BSA knife as the knives themselves were not stamped with either the First Class rank emblem or the words "OFFICIAL BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA", from 1946 to 1953 (maybe 1955). The knives were shipped with a sheath that was embossed with the NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS seal. The knives were also sold with a standard Western 5" sheath.
