Need advice & suggestions on next sheath

Post by dbe4876 »

Did my stamping tonight. Practiced on a couple of scraps long enough to realize I had no idea how to get this right. LoL Then, I watched a video (link below) and had an “Ah ha!” moment. Went straight to my face piece and started in. I think there’s one overlap, and by the time I got to the top I was a bit crooked overall. My biggest mistake was forgetting where my perimeter lines were and going past them right up to the stitch groove. Hoping that will work out.

Trying to figure out how long to go with the fringe. Advice, pointers, are welcome on either. Thx

Its not perfect, but looks good. All you can do now is keep practicing. You will get better and better with each sheath
These aren’t perfect either.

Looks good. Likely you’re the only one that will know it’s not perfect.

Nice work there! And it seems dark colors and/or antiqing helps cover our boo boos! 😏

Not my work. Just factory stamping. Point being the pattern is never perfect and nobody notices.

You will be far more critical of your own work than anyone else will.

An artist or even a tradesman sees every detail and notices their mistakes when nobody else will. Trick is not to point them out to people.

Looks like you have a solid start! I am far from an expert but have been playing with sheaths for some time. Some where along the line I picked up a tip about basket weave stamping to help stay straight. before you start lay a ruler down on the leather and very very faintly trace a line which you will follow when you start. I usually just use a modeling spoon tip. Then you can put your first stamp with one edge along the line say you start to the right. So then you can match one leg of the basket weave stamp on the left and line up the other leg on the line and then repeat on the right. Keep alternating till you get to top and bottom of the line. I have found this to be very helpful in staying straight. That said I still get off some times but with practice you get pretty smooth with them and you learn how to correct mistakes. I also use a optivisor to magnify what I am doing which helps me a good bit cause I am at an age where my eyes are not as good as they once were lol. I attached 2 sheaths with some basketweave on them below. For reference. Also note you can change orientation angle and straight up and down. They also make many sizes of basket weave stamps too just fyi.

Anyway looks good and keep going fun stuff making sheaths imo.

best
