Robeson 4 Blade

The first Robeson knives were imported by Millard Robeson from England and Germany exclusively. This continued from 1979 until 1896 when Robeson began manufacturing knives in the United States. Since inception, the company has gone through several reorganizations & eventually ended up as a Queen Cutlery brand.

Robeson 4 Blade

Post by bkazz5 »

Just found this one. Not sure what you would call this pattern. Maybe a reverse gunstock congress. I am a little suspicious if this knife has had a blade replacement or if it is real at all? All blades are stamped. Three are Robeson Shuredge (script) Rochester and one is arched Robeson over USA over Cutlery. The pattern # is 742266. The 7 should indicate this to be a pearl knife. So, is it a re-blade or was it not that uncommon for pattern stamps to not match the knife? Have you seen Robeson with this type bone jigging. Lots of questions. Appreciate any feedback. Not going to hurt my feelings.

That’s a rare beauty. I call the pattern a “double gunstock”. Most are pens, all of them I have seen have either two or four blades. I have a couple of them and always looking for more. I’ll defer to those more familiar with Robesons to answer your other questions.

I had a similar Robeson, same pattern number, but with pearl handles.

I sold it year before last in Lexington to an elderly gentleman that collects double-ended gunstocks.

He told me it was the only such knife at the show.

I suspect your knife as been rehandled, but if so, they did an excellent job. Can you see pins inside the frame for the shield? Or possibly holes, but no pins?

It really should have pearl handles.

It is entirely possible that a cutler picked the wrong master blade for the knife. I’ve seen it before.

Robeson did use some picked bone early on and I’ll post a photo below.

I have never seen that bone on a Robeson knife.

Nothing at all wrong with the way the blades are stamped.

Unfortunately, I do not have a photo at hand of my pearl double-ended gunstock.

Isn't that a patch on the right end of the pile side Charlie?
I wouldn't think the handle was replaced if that's a patch, if that's what I'm seeing.

I think Charlie is probably referring to the pattern number on the knife. In Robeson pattern numbering system the first digit denotes the handle cover material. In this case “7”, which should be pearl. https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/ca ... ing-system

He was, but he intimated it might have been rehandled or the wrong blade could have been used by mistake.

Don’t know if that’s a patch. There is certainly a difference in the picking pattern there.

I’ve collected Robesons since 1988 and have looked at thousands of knives. That is only the second one of those I’ve ever seen.

Thanks for the responses. I looked closely at that area that looks darker. If it is a patch it was done very well and what would appear to be a long time ago. I don't think it is a patch but I know there are guys out there that are very good at that kind of stuff. It does have some other similar dark areas which also leads me to believe it is not a patch.
