A Kukri and a Machete

Post by ThatWeirdKnifeGuy »

I picked this duo up today, looking for a little info. I don't usually deal with things with blades longer than about 3 inches, but these were cool. Im wondering first about the age. Is the machete ww2 era? If so then I'm inclined to believe the kukri is too. The store owner buys and sells storage locker contents. He said these two came from different units different towns months apart, but i would have guessed they both came home with the same soldier if he hadn't told me that.

Also, im not very well versed on wood types. Can anyone tell me if this is coco bolo on the kukri?

I'm not very familiar with the machete either. Is the handle micarta? Or maybe Rogers board? Is the black coating a black oxide? Or has it been Parkerized? Im just looking to remove all the neglect, I don't want to remove any of the coating if possible when I do.

Thanks for any input if you've got it

I don't know what wood it is but I'd guess it's probably not Cocobolo. Cocobolo is native to Central America. Asia has lots of exotic hardwoods like rosewood so it could be that or something similar. Nice pieces. J.O'.

Thanks for the input my dude. On one hand the fit and finish seems a bit rustic. On the other it's quite comfortable in the hand and the blade construction seems quality. The fullering surprises me. Probably necessary with all that steel. But I wouldn't expect it coming from what I assume would be a shop with limited tools. But then again maybe not? I read once "Anything you can make with a mill you can make with a file. Learn to use a file."

Ontario made those machetes for a long time. I don’t think there is a way to date it. Did it come with a sheath?

I would scrape the rust off, with a brass scraper. I use a flattened rifle cartridge. Then oil and a rag.

No sheath. For either. Im going to flatten a copper tube in my vice and fashion a handle to make a scraper. Im not tooled up to handle these big boys.
