Carl Dede Knife
Carl Dede Knife
I picked this knife up at an Estate sale this week. I wasn't going to buy any more knives, but when I picked this one up, it felt really good in the hand, and you could feel the quality. Carbon steel, stag handles, nice sheath. I was cleaning it up later at home, and noticed "Dede" stamped in very small letters on the handle liner near the tang. I did a little research and found this story from 1994, as well as a couple of pics from Montana knife stores on Facebook. Carl Dede made the knives out of old saw blades up in Montana. He was evidently still making knives as of 2016. Nice little knife - glad I picked it up.

Mike, that is a great find. And the history makes it even better. Congrats.

I like the style!
Looks very good. I love to to artisans who are good with knives.

Interesting knife. I like it. That's one way to make a knife safe from your hand slipping forward down the edge absent a hand guard.
As a 16 year old I made a knife out of a broken power hack saw blade that my metal shop teacher had saved for a student. It was an earlier blade that was through harden rather than the then current blades which had only their edge hardened electronically. I ground it without getting the blade very hot so it is still very hard. Too hard to ever risk loaning it to someone.
Now I'm tempted to waste gasoline searching for that illusive garage sale that has a valuable knife at a price I could brag about. Some how that's never happened.

Thanks guys. My wife and I have started to go to estate sales pretty regularly ever since we retired a few years ago. My sister works for a company that does them, and she gives me a heads up if there are knives, guns, or vintage tools. We find all kinds of stuff we didn't know we needed!Modern Slip Joints wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2024 7:21 pm
