Tang stamp mystery!

Post by bocaj »

A few weeks ago I found a big 4 inch multipurpose knife with brass handles . The thing begged me to buy it for 88 cents ! It looks like an organ grinder on one side and an acrobat or basket ball player on the other. All of interesting BUT the master actually is stamped with a flute logo. I have included pictures . Please help me understand what the logo indicates and if you think it was a circus give away or what ! Thanks.

It looks like there is a "snake" along with the "flute."
Maybe a reference to a snake charmer? ::shrug::

I think what appears to be a snake is just oxidation of the carbon steel. This knife looks like a French knife known as a Coursolle. They are still made today and still feature brass scales with various scenes presented in relief.

Is there a tang stamp (on the tang)?

Definitely European, and I do think there's a flute/clarinet. I don't think there's a snake though.

There is one on eBay as of this posting.
Enter "ANTIQUE POCKET KNIFE WITH BOXER + TENNIS PLAYER 1920s / 1930s USA ENGLAND"
in the eBay search box.

I'm sure it did. Could anyone resist a find like that?
