Antietam/Sharpsburg, 162nd Anniversary

Welcome to AAPK's Veteran’s Forum. This is a place where veterans can meet, get to know one another better, perhaps swap a story or two, and share any recent information that they have acquired from the Veterans Administration, DoD and Veterans Service Organizations, including but not limited to, DAV, AMVETS, VFW, American Legion, PVA, and MOPH. Another good source of information are branch specific organizations.
We will have a voluntary CHECKING IN topic where you can introduce yourself, years serve and branch or branches of service. Welcome Aboard!

Antietam/Sharpsburg, 162nd Anniversary

Post by Ridgegrass »

Tomorrow, September 17th, is the 162nd anniversary of the bloodiest day in American warfare. 12,400 Union and 10,320 Confederate dead, wounded, missing. 22,720 total lost. If you live within travel distance it is a sobering experience to stand at Bloody Lane or Burnside's Bridge, or Miller's Cornfield, or the Dunkard Church and follow the wonderful, self-guided tours of the battlefield that honor the deeds of the soldiers of both sides. The battlefield and it's surrounding farmland are very well preserved without the commercial and tourist development of some other famous sites. J.O'.

Wish I had the day off! But I do have 10 days off starting on Thursday . . .
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

I been there two times. It's an experience. There's much more history to this battle and it's far reaching consequences than I'd realized. Last time I was there sat in Dunker Church and pondered things for some time.
