It is certainly an attractive and useful looking knife. I'm partial to a spear blade.Rooster84 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 7:02 am Hello I got this knife a while back at a local hunting store . If Case had made any of their 05 Barlow vault release knives with spear or, even better, clip master blades I'd own some of them. With most knives sold being based around faster one hand opening it's hard to justify one arm bandit blades. I'll keep my speculative guesses to myself and watch for an explaination for this knife's second zero.

Re: Case Old Red Bone Pocket Worn Barlow 62005SS
My guess is the added zero is because of the cap bolster, which the "regular" 05 pattern doesn't have.

Re: Case Old Red Bone Pocket Worn Barlow 62005SS
While a member with a shut mouth or inactive key board seldom has to eat their foot, I can't resist revealing my speculative guesses any longer. I do not know of any other instances of an extra zero indicating left end bolsters. I do know that extra zeros have accompanied changes in handle dimensions and manufacture by a different company. In both cases the extra zero alerts Case's repairmen to the need for different parts. Perhaps knowing the date code eliminates the need for an extra zero after a change in handle dimensions so two zeros were not used again on later production runs. Would my foot taste better with Heinz or A-1 sauce?
By the way, those are regular bolsters, not tip bolsters. They only look short compared to the right side bolsters.

FWIW, Pfeiffer’s Collecting Case Knives says
Sometimes adding a zero to the pattern number, either at the beginning or in the middle, can denote a change in blade configuration, but there are examples where a zero has also been used for a completely different pattern (6111-1/2 “Cheetah” versus 61011 “Hawkbill” for example). In some situations it means different materials from the “standard” zero-less pattern, and sometimes the zero is used on an outsourced contract-made knife. There seems no consistency. If anyone knows the why-for of Case’s use of zeroes……….

Interestingly there was a 005 pattern as far back as the Case Bradford era, but it had no cap bolster at that time. Those had pattern numbers stamped on them, and were in fact stamped 62005 (knifedb.com has examples). Not sure what prompted the extra zero in the pattern at that time. The introduction of the razor master blade to my knowledge was at least as early as the TESTED XX era, well before the introduction of the “Vault” marketing scheme, and well before one-hand opening knives became a “thing”. IIRC Case reintroduced it in the 1970s and Collectors soon dubbed it a “one armed man” pattern. I don’t know if that was Case’s intention for the knife’s use or if it was a marketing gimmick for collector appeal. I do know my brother-in-law who lost an arm in an accident while a teenager carried one.The 05 pattern with a razor master blade was reintroduced into the Case standard product line in 1989-1990. However, at this time the pattern was retooled to include a lower bolster and was made with polished stainless steel blades. It has been produced in this configuration with both spear and razor master blades as the 005 pattern in recent years.

Doubtful. I suspect there were several thousand made. Every year. Could depend on your definition of “rare” I guess. Maybe they only made a few with red pocket worn bone, or a few with that blade configuration. I don’t keep up with all those variations but some collectors might consider that rare, if that’s the case.

Re: Case Old Red Bone Pocket Worn Barlow 62005SS
Old Case catalogs (at least the reprints I have) called the 05 a “single bolster jack”. The only pattern labeled as “BARLOW” was the 009.

Just my opinion
Don’t think it’s a Barlow
More of a Jack
Interesting blade combo though

Re: Case Old Red Bone Pocket Worn Barlow 62005SS
Looking for it in “a book” is probably futile. There have been no books that I know of that have been published since it was made that would include recently made Case knives. If you haven’t done so already, check eBay (both current and sold listings) for the knife. If you find one similar made within +/- a few years it will be the same as those.
If there’s something more you’re wanting to know, please be specific. Otherwise I don’t know what you’re looking for - we’re just shooting in the dark.

Re: Case Old Red Bone Pocket Worn Barlow 62005SS
I followed a suggestion and went to WWW.KNIFEDB.COM
Mr.David Garlick got back with me and he replied (Out of over 27,500 knives I have listed this is the 1st Case Old Red Bone 62005ss Barlow I have ever seen .In fact I believe this to be a very rare combination. So he listed it on his website.

The only way to find its true worth is to put it on eBay starting at $.99 and see where she ends up.
