First Cup Diner!

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Good morning. Off to work in the city. Years ago when I went into Duluth to do a job, I almost always hit an antique shop, pawn shop, auction house or a knife/gun/sporting goods dealer at noon while I ate my lunch in my truck. At least every other day I'd find some knife or knife related item that I "needed" to purchase. There were several shops that always had knives. Now days there is one very large shop. I stopped there last Saturday, and they had knives but not a single one that interested me in the least for any price. I watch the knives scroll past the top of the screen on AAPK and almost non of them are old knives in good condition, Most seem to be Chinese or modern ones for way more than I would ever pay for a knife. I think I got old and have enough old knives that nothing much catches my attention any more. Thank God I still drink coffee and you guys still hang around. I do think I need to dig through my safes and post pictures of some of my better stuff and maybe generate some interest back into my own head. My plan was to collect and start selling off when i got too old to work. Then I couldn't quit working because I still wanted to collect. Now I'm probably too old to work, not collecting, and not quite ready to start selling, and still working. Nothing seems to make sense any more to me or Jane. I get the feeling that our life is too much like we have been on a long trip that has run it's course and we are sitting in a motel somewhere, all packed up and ready to go home and are just waiting to check out. I'm guessing a new chapter in my life started and somehow I missed the ending of the old one. I should write a book. It's Tuesday isn't it? I hate Tuesdays. I'm going to work. Have a good one and do something fun.____Dave

Morning folks, 37 heading to the mid 50's. Bountiful sunshine.
Critters are fed and the dishes warshed and put away. Wampus was sitting on his throne awaiting breakfast.
The big feeders will need attention this afternoon and a couple of the suet baskets are getting low.
I have not bought a knife this year bid on a couple and made my best offer on a few but no luck or you could say I'm lucky I reckon.
If this ole south wind will lay it's gonna be a fine day for piddling around outdoors. Let's get another cuppa joe and ponder on it awhile. Hope yawl have a good'un and be careful out there. ::handshake::

Dave and some of you other guys
I feel that those of us that have been self-employed much of our lives find it hard to give it up and really retire, myself included. I’m similar age and still work 3 days a week and make all the major business decisions.
I have sold most of my late hubby’s knife collection, close to 5000 pieces. Still have about 2 dozen I can’t seem to let go. Then I started collecting autos, it is a vicious circle.
And then there’s my thousands of pieces of vintage and antique jewelry that needs to be downsized. And other collections of “stuff”.
When I think of the money spent on somethings I think Why?

Good morning . Agree with you regarding self employment. It hasn’t been easy starting from scratch 40 years ago but it’s been rewarding. Tried working in a factory after the Army and hated it and working for big companies. So little brother and I went on our own. Now approaching 70 have dropped to 3 days and really do enjoy going to a job site and being part of the process of new construction.
As to collecting , have really slowed down and even been selling things. Don’t want to leave the task of selling to Heidi or the boys . They have no interest or knowledge in those areas.
This week seems to be our January thaw we get every year. And 30 feels great after last week . It was so cold our eyelids were freezing!
You all have a great day out there or at least try

Good Wednesday Mornin' to Y'all!
39° is the low for the day, rising to somewhere in the 70s. Extended 10 day forecast is similar. :)
A trip to Panama seems to consume most of the day anymore. Got the shoulder shot and had a good dinner at Po' Folks Restaurant at the foot of the Bailey Bridge, made it home in time for a mid-afternoon nap. Had to quarter the deer from Monday afternoon and get him in the cooler before we had breakfast yesterday morning, always something to do. Need to get a haircut, been about a month, feeling shaggy, not "squared away" like we once were over 55 and 60 years ago with a haircut every week! ::hmm:: Some of y'all remember those days. Mid-week bible study and planning for Thursday's workday will probably take place this afternoon.
Coffee hit the spot this morning!
Enjoy the day, good folks.

Good morning. Another decent day here as far as weather goes. My body is giving me grief about working on installing the flooring with too much bending, stretching, kneeling and getting back up and everything from the waste down hurts. I'm getting more suited for a desk job each day. The floor is coming along well and we should be done laying it today, and we might have some trimming yet to do tomorrow. Next week will be more working upright back at the big house doing ceilings and blowing insulation. WE are supposed to get some kind of a measurable snow event this weekend, but it appears the temps will stay off the bottom. Have a good Thursday.____Dave

Good Mornin', Dave and others to stop by the diner this morning.
Dave, flooring work is for young men! ::poke:: We admire your grit!
48° here at Starvation Plantation, 5% chance of showers early this morning, tomorrow there's an 80% probability of "storms". We'll know Saturday if the forecast was correct. ::nod::
Sad news concerning the mid-air collision last evening near Washington. :(
Workday today, my helper is questionable today, he spent a couple of days in the hospital with blood pressure issues earlier in the week.
We're making a venison stew for our noon meal, a knuckle roast (sirloin tip) and a tri-tip will be the main ingredients plus potatoes, carrots, onions, sweet peppers and seasoning. Miss Joy will probably make some corn bread to go with the stew.
Got a haircut yesterday while I was running errands yesterday. Went to the woods and exchanged cards, got some more snow pictures from last week's event. Critters seem to adapt much better than us old folks.
Coffee is being enjoyed!
Y'all have a good day!

Mornin' Y'all

Reasonable temps today, a little wind and a little sunshine.
I was going to work on replacing the headlights in the wife's Charger today, which of course entails
removing the entire front-end. She convinced me to do it some weekend when she could be here to 'assist'.
Actual metal in that part, might be a tad difficult to put it back by myself ....

Phil, I didn't know there were any Po'Folks still in existence! Have not seen one since I was a pup.
We'll have to check that out next time we're down in PCB.

Yawl have a great pre-Friday

Good morning!
(Sip)
Most mornings lately I have had to eat breakfast and run, but I have a little time to relax today. Work has been stressful, but they have finally hired me some help, so it is getting better.
I had tried some flavored coffees recently, and the Eggnog flavored from Christmas is almost gone. I have enjoyed it.
(Sip)
I have not repaired any knives in weeks, and I am missing the shop time. I expect to head to the Beulah Knife Show in Boaz Alabama on Saturday, so I will likely not repair any this weekend either. It is small as far as knife shows go, but every year me, my brother, and my Dad attend the show, and get lunch together. We are close and see each other often, but that is the only time that we ever take a "roadtrip" together, just the three of us.

(Sip)
May your coffee be strong!

Good Morning Everyone!
Reverand, when I was the Air Operations Chief at NAS Meridian, MS several of my guys would start in October asking me when my wife was making her annual Christmas pilgrimage to Boaz, AL. She would take our full size van and 5 or 6 of the wives and they would go to Boaz for three days to shop for Christmas, birthdays and whatever else they needed. She described it as a place of shops, hotels, and restaurants and she wasn't sure if anyone actually lived there. She even went back one time after we moved to Texas. Oh well she is sick today with some kind of virus so I'm taking care of her. Have a blessed day everyone and be safe.... :D

We used to shop there often, mainly kids clothes when my girls were little and we were too poor to afford Walmart clothes!
All of the outlet stores are gone now. Many of the buildings were converted to restaurants or movie theaters, but many just gone. It happened slowly as the manufacturing moved overseas, but it is a sad place now.

Good Morning. I just wanted to greet everyone because I am up so early (for Me).

My car has been in the shop for a few days and I am nervous about how much I will have to spend. I asked for a total inspection of everything. The car is 22 years old at nearly 130 thousand miles. Over the years I have been repeatedly asked by others, especially mechanics, if they could buy the car. Car people recognize this model as something a little special.

The Civic SI (sport injected) was put together in England, has a two-liter engine and handles like a pricy sports car. The 6-speed manual transmission is a work of art. Moving thru the gears is incredibly smooth and produces just positive "click" sounds. One of the major car magazines wondered why a Lamborghini couldn't shift as smoothly as the CSI,

The great fun of this car is driving on twisty curvy roads at high speed. It tracks as if it were glued to the pavement with no tendency to break loose.
Do I love this car? You betcha. Some years ago there was a terrorist attack on the London subway. Watching live coverage of the event I saw what the narrator called "the specials" arrive. A string of CSIs arrived each carrying two men. All of them were wearing leather jackets and carrying submachine guns. This persuaded me that I was the owner of a very cool car. It has been a great companion on my travels. It deserves to have some money spent on it.

Good Mornin', Garry! You are up early this morning. Cloudy this morning and 62°, clouds are rushing to the north. The weather is supposed to be here later in the afternoon or evening.
We have regular 6 month doctor appointments this morning, they told us to "come fasting", no coffee or breakfast. Sounds like a Waffle House morning. ::tu:: Fiesta Omelet with jalapeños. ::nod::
Workday went well yesterday, venison stew was great along with fried cornbread at noon.
January has flown by, 4 months and hurricane season begins. ::hmm::
Y'all have a good day.

Good morning. Another nice day appears to be headed my way. Tomorrow might be a little different story with up to 6 inches of snow predicted, or not. We cold use a few more inches for ground protection from the cold, but not all at once. We finished the floor project and have another very happy customer and that's always gratifying. It's back to the large house to put up the remainder of ceiling getting it ready to fill the attic space with 16 inches of blown insulation, probably next week. I've got nothing planned for the weekend which is probably good if the weather does turn bad. Have a great Friday.____Dave
