Has this Case 6279 been altered?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Has this Case 6279 been altered?

Post by Wolfmort »

I bought this Case 6279 on eBay and need some expert opinion. The main blade just doesn't look right to me; it seems shorter than it should be, and the tip stands proud above the liner and scale. I don't know if the tip had been broken and re-ground, or if the blade was replaced, or this was how the knife was made. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps one or both of the blades have been improperly sharpened?

Or the tip broken off and reprofiled.

My thoughts also. Both appear incorrectly and excessively sharpened. Master appears shorter than it should. A blade that is “proud”/“peeking” when closed is a symptom of being shorter than proper. Judicious filing of the kick is a possible fix for a proud blade. Be very careful if you attempt filing the kick - check frequently as the kick is filed to be sure the blade’s nail nick remains accessible.

As a collectable, in my opinion it has no value. If you bought it to use, whether you overpaid is up to you. ::hmm::

Thanks for all of the input and pretty much confirms what I thought. Yeah, I won't be selling this. Appreciate the info.
