Farmer's Jacks
Re: Farmer's Jacks
Thanks again guys.
We know Joseph Paxton was the architect of the 1851 World Exposition Crystal Palace , which Paxton designed after his greenhouses . Paxton was the head gardener for the Duke of Devonshire. He grew the first Victoria lily that bloomed outside of native habitat. He also cultivated the Cavendish banana , the one that we all enjoy today.
I imagine the Paxton Knife was commissioned shortly after Paxton was knighted for his effort with the Crystal Palace and the Great Exposition . The Crystal Palace was constructed to enable the ease of removal from Hyde Park , where it was located.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
I was fortunate to get to handle the vintage ones.
Lyle must have thought I wouldn’t care for the customs.
He was wrong.

The custom was made kinda for me with only minor input from me at last year's show. I didn't know it was there. I had to buy it back from the makers neighbor, as I missed it until the end of the show.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
Work in progress. encouraged by Lyle. He provided some old knives for me to study. My drawing got scaled a little somewhere in the process, so this is a little more compact than the original.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
Very interesting design. The overall shape appears a bit different than a typical farmer's jack.
I particularly like the bolsters!

Re: Farmer's Jacks
Yes , I didn't do any beveling at the front of the bolster or do more traditional 'rat tail' or other fluting. A rat tail has the flute going right over the pin. This one has already been a big challenge for me, I didn't want to add one more thing.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
A challenge accomplished masterfully. I am honored to have added Ash's fine example of craftsmanship in the Farmers jack family. 3.8 inch with very nice Ash crafted jigged bone.ashwinearl wrote: ↑Tue Oct 29, 2024 11:52 amYes , I didn't do any beveling at the front of the bolster or do more traditional 'rat tail' or other fluting. Re: Farmer's Jacks
A friend of mine ( Paul C ) helped me obtain this fine example of Kroo's example of a farmers jack. At 3 7/8" (GEC size) a lovely example it is.

Re: Farmer's Jacks
All,
I wrote a blog article about my recent experience building the Farmer's Jack. The audience is primarily other knifemakers. But I think anyone interested in nuances in the pattern and build from a maker's perspective would find it interesting.
