Multi tool saw blade

Post by OLDE CUTLER »

Multi tool saw blades can dull to the point of being useless. I have this A-TECH multi tool that I got from Cody in the last POS exchange. The points were somewhat blunt, so I decided to give it a try with the triangular files that I use for sharpening handsaws. Clamping it into a vise and duplicating the angle resulted in a big improvement to the saw tips with 4 strokes of the file each. I always test saw blade sharpness on multi tools by doing the vertical hang test as shown. Before the multi tool would slide off my thumb and fall to the floor. Now with the saw tips sharpened, it stays right on the thumb. I used a Nicholson ultra slim taper file.

Good work on the multi-tool's saw. ::tu::

The alternative is to replace the saw blade if they are available. All the parts for the prior generation of Leatherman Waves & Super Tools were available a few years ago. At the closest gun show one month a seller had about 5 tables covered with shoe boxes full of those parts. For several years a regular table holder sold the prior generation rebuilt Waves for $25 & Super Tools for $20.

Have you ever sharpened a bow saw? Depending on length new blades at Ace are $7-$9.50 so it might not be worth the trouble but we all sharpen chain saws. My test for sharp is to draw a line across a board with a square then see it the saw will cut straight down the line. Saws tend to dull unevenly side to side making them cut a curved line which makes bow saws more prone to getting stuck in larger branches.

Never sharpened a bow saw. Probably not economically feasable.
