Blade steel preferences?

Post by Bryan »

What type of steel do you prefer for knives that you are going to collect rather than use? Do you mind giving up some performance to achieve lower maintenance as found with many newer "stainless" blades?

Bryan;

personally for the little extra money definatly want it a user weither i AM USEING OR JUST COLLECTING.What good is any tool if cant be relied on to do the job it is made to do?

As for the steel.no less than true 440C with proper heat treat and cryo for that little extra umph!.

Any old school(Like me) likes carbon steel blades. We dont mind brushing the horse down before we put him/her away.

S30V seems to be pop. now but I think any high quility stainless/semi stainless(D2)with proper heat treat will be fine.

You can tell from my post here I put a great deal of emphices on Heat treat and I'm not alone in believing a good steel badly heat treated is inferiore and a Lesser steel with a good heat treat will most likely do the job it is designed for.

To sum up: Form (and as far as that goes,material,fit,finnish and exacution)follows Function.Thats is to say what the tool is intended and expected to do.

Thats MHO on the subject.

For the most part, I agree with Paul. I feel like it is just as important (if not more important) to have top performing, useable steel for collectable knives as it is for users. That is only my own personal preference.

I ask this question because I have heard several collectors say that they would prefer steel that is more rust resistant. Even if they have to sacrifice blade performance. I can understand the logic... Who wants an expensive knife that may rust if you don't keep an eye on it?
