Razors Etc. From The Robeson Cutlery Company

Post by RobesonsRme.com »

Here is some shaving ephemera from the Robeson Cutlery Company.

It is a little straight razor sales booklet that I think is from the early 1900's.

There are eye holes in the front cover and the first page, so that the young man's eyes on page three peek through.

I tend to avoid the plain white or black handled everyday razors, unless they pre-date the 20th century.

Here are some older razors that are from the 1890's.
Some of these have nice blade etchings.
The first two are marked, GERMANY.
The third has no country of origin. It might have been made by the Sherwood/Bingham cutlers in Camillus.

I also like razors that advertise The Robeson Cutlery Company, either via a corporate logo etch on the blade or an identifying name on the handle.

And, I like razors with fancy handles.

These are all full sized razors.

There are a couple of Terriers.

Here's a little "Twisted Rope" handled corn razor, some Robeson and Terrier boxes, a Robeson Shuredge razor hone, a felt case that most Robeson razors were shipped in, and a little box of ShurEdge strop dressing.

Thanks, MB. I try to limit myself to the categories I described.
I've got a couple of recent acquisitions that I need to scan.
I'm still looking for a Terrier corn razor. Seen 'em. Heard about 'em. I just don't have one yet.

This is a fancy aluminum handled Robeson razor, and a close-up of it's very nice gold filled blade etch.

This is not my razor. ::dang:: It sold on Ebay, well beyond my budget, a few years back. ::dang::

I think this is a great razor. Aluminum was considered premium material at the time.

As long as I'm posting some Robeson razors that sold on Ebay to someone other than myself, I thought I'd include this travel shaving set.

It consists of a case, a razor, and a hand-held, two-sided hone.

The top of the case is very nicely embossed with a gold leaf legend that reads:

"The Conveyable Shaving Equipment. The Robeson Cutlery Co., Rochester, N. Y."

I've seen three of these, all on Ebay. This was, by far, the best example.

And, I let it sell for not a whole lot of money, less than fifty dollars, I think. I know. That was stooopid. ::disgust::

I suspect genuine bone handled razors are quite rare by any of the various American manufacturers.

Here's a nice Robeson with jigged bone handles.

This, too, sold on Ebay and not to me.

Collecting razors is more about the handles, I think, than anything else.

This is a nice, "Lady with Flowing Hair" handled Robeson. The lady's head is to the left on the handle.

Another loss to an Ebay buyer that was quicker with his keyboard, or more well off than myself. ::shrug::

Maybe I should just collect !!PICTURES!! of Robeson knives and razors. They cost much less. ::nod::

Here are a few Robeson razors I've acquired since I last posted here.

The first is a white fancy celluloid embossed razor with a very nice old Robeson R. C. CO logo in a three leaf clover.

Second is a razor with an etched pearl-covered tang and a "ShurEdge" blade etch. The etches are nicely filled with gold highlights. I had a razor exactly like this, but without the gold. I posted it earlier in this thread. I have now traded that razor off for the next one below..........

.......Which is a genuine bone handled razor. I got this razor at the Dalton, GA knife show. The asking price on this razor was $450.00!!!!!. I traded him my culled pearl tang razor and $100.00 boot for it.

Next is a tortoise celluloid covered tang and handle. I bought this one off Ebay.

Last is a very nice Terrier imitation tortoise with a very nice clean box. The handle has the "Lady with Flowing Hair" handle design. Terrier items date from 1910 - 1916.

The photos will expand twice, if you want to see detail.

Found this one at a flea market a week ago. Only the long end of the box, with the end missing on it. Bought the razor and when I got it home I found the guarantee slip. It took a week in a book to get it as good as the pics show.

That's a nice old Robeson razor. Congratulations on that one. Don't see very many double etched razors. And, I've never seen that "New Science Concave" etched blade on a plain black handle.

I've seen that "A. Munson & Son" etch before though, on an old Robeson pocketknife.

Here's a couple of photos of a pearl handled Robeson Wharnecliff that sold on Ebay some time ago. I did not win this knife. I only wish I had.

I think Munson was located in Upstate New York.

BTW; there was a time when that written guarantee included several small coupons that could be detached and sent with the razor back to the factory and redeemed for a free resharpening.

Picked up this nice Terrier from Ebay this past week.

A Christmas present to myself. ::tu::

It arrived in a plain, unmarked, black razor case.

Charlie,
Great razors and stuff. I will try and get some photos up tomorrow of any Robeson razors I have, which may be different from those posted.

I picked this strop/hone combo up not too long ago and it fits in this thread.

The leather sleeve is marked Robeson Shur Edge in script and CUSHION STROP BACK HONE. The sleeve is brittle and in rough condition
The strop is a thick felt like material mated to a chunk of leather
The hone is in very nice condition and it is a 'No. 3100 - FOR WIRY BEARDS'

I bought this Robeson razor off EBay this past week for twenty dollars.

I have never seen such a razor like this from Robeson with a blade etch like that.

It was probably a special order. I’d love to know how many were made.
