A pocket knife is still an intimate personal possession of the individual who carries it and consequently deserves the best of materials, finish and workmanship in its production. (Quoted from Boker's 1928 cutlery catalog).

Ironic that the three spring design which must have been more expensive to produce was commonly used on the most utilitarian of knives, like cattle knives and three bladed electricians. Here are Klein and Camillus electricians.

I guess if you need to put a label on it, you'd call this Henckels a four blade stockman skinner. :) At 4" OAL closed, it has a little heft to it.

OK I thought;seems to me I have a couple of three backspring knives around somewhere.Upon checking it seems I have more than a few but I'll post them anyway.
First up is a Henry Sears 1865 with a strange blade arrangement(2 blades in one end and one in the other)and some of the strangest colored bone I've ever seen(browns, reds, grays, yellows)and a pattern I can only decribe as a humpback stockman for want of a better term.
Second & third are a couple of High Carbon Steel USA 5 blades with the master blades etched "Craftsman" STA-SHARP barely visible. One has a propeller shield and the other a badge type.Beautiful jigged bone scales.
Fourth is a stag scaled multiblade with shotshell puller bolsters marked,"Tonerini Scarperia". The file work is mine.5 tools.
Fifth is another stag scaled multi marked,"Aitor Made in Spain".8 tools altogether.
Sixth is a gardener's knife by Frederich Hartkopf with ebony scales and clip master blade;pruner;saw;and broken off Seton's needle.
Seventh is a Mikov stag scaled multiblade.
Eighth is a Kershaw 5 blade with G10 style scales.
Ninth is an IXL Horsemans knife in near mint condition.I bought this one years ago for $25 and it was a bargain then.
Last picture is a group of multiblades together. The two really big ones(10 and 13 backsprings respectively)are Pakistani and Italian. The Pakistani one is essentially 2 five blade knives put together.Construction isn't bad and it was cheap;I bought it at a pawn shop for $10 in the original box. The Italian one came in a trade from a friend and is totally impractical;except maybe to put in a heavy woolen sock and use it as a club.

The three-backspring knives may be more common than you think, as Buck still makes at least two. I thought I remembered seeing 3 springs so I checked my Buck 301 & 303 stockman both are the stockman pattern, made with 3 backsprings.

Anton Wingen, Jr. camp/utility. Wood handles (ebony?) and steel liners. Nail nick on both sides of main blade.

Give that man a seegar!!

"back in the day" ( up until about the beginning of the 20th century, it was thought that bleeding animals (and people) was cure for certain maladies. The technical name for that blade is a "fleam".

Very cool! I think I've seen a catalog image of that knife, I believe it was called "yankee whittler". Maher & grosh catalogs are very entertaining
