Vintage Whittler Knives

Post by Miller Bro's »

We need a thread here in Knife Lore for vintage whittler knives. I have been taking a liking to this pattern recently, in years past the old time knife collectors prized this pattern above all others, especially Wharncliffe whittlers. They were eagerly sought and high prices paid for them, however in recent times the demand has slowed and prices have dropped on this particular pattern.

The pattern was costly to make and was pricey when they were new, not to mention the very best cutlers made them as they were difficult to make, all the blades have to close exactly where they need to be when assembled. The old knife companies must have regarded them highly as well, because several old pocket knife boxes I have proudly display their whittler pattern on the label.

Here are a few I have in my collection, I would like to see many more posted in this thread

Here are a couple knife boxes with the Whittler on the label.

A pocket knife is still an intimate personal possession of the individual who carries it and consequently deserves the best of materials, finish and workmanship in its production. (Quoted from Boker's 1928 cutlery catalog).

Very nice knives being shown. This is the only older whittler I have. Any ideas what age it might be? It is an IXL Wostenholm without any "oil the joints" stamps (pretty sure that doesn't really help in determining age though).

Some from my collection;hardly perfect but all unique to me anyway.

Harrison Bros.& Howson.Note the placement of the nail mark.
A strange one:master blade is Henckels;secondary blade is IXL.One stamped on back C.Langbein NY. Langbein was a wholesaler but also repaired knives so this is likely an old repair by them.
Three IXLs.The ivory one doesn't have a broken blade;that was the way it was made.Shield is dated 1870.
New York Knife Co with ivory scales.
A Remington.
Repeat Needham Bros.
Just markd Rostfrei.Don't know if this is really a whittler;especially with the corkscrew.

I posted this S&M on another thread long ago. It is the most vintage whittler I have. I believe it is just shy of 40 years.

Nice knives everyone! Hopefully more pictures will follow.

RDKnives: Thanks, I'm glad you liked them.

MRB: Thank you. Boker also made that same style knife in pearl, though I don't have one. What brand is the one you have in pearl? ::hmm::

OK. For posterity and in the spirit of Dimitri's Vintage Whittler thread, here are some whiitlers
made by or for The Robeson Cutlery Company between 1891 and 1965.
