Camillus Gran'pa

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Camillus Gran'pa

Post by trail »

I bought two of these small pen knives from an ebay seller. They look like something the factory may have cobbled together in the last years to try to use parts. The shields are stamped crookedly "Gran'pa. On the knife pictured. the insetting of the shield is crude with a lot of gapping, on the other it is somewhat better. They have big brass spacers to allow the main blade a place to fall since both blades ride on the same backspring. There is no pattern number stamp. Despite any shortcomings, the knives have the solid Camillus fit with good snap, well-fitting handles and bolsters and attractive jigged delrin. New Camillus knives are still out there, but the prices are going up and I was real glad to get a couple to add to my collection. The seller sold ten sets of two and they didn't last long.

Paul, does it surprise you that Vit has all four of the Gran'pa knives? Like you, I have the #104 and unlike Vit, my shield also has a poor fit. Other than that the little knife is okay. Emphasis on "little".

There were 6 knives in the Gran’pa series according to the information I got from Tom Williams.

CGP104 –2 blades, like the Schrade 104OT
CGP12 –single clip blade like the 12OT
CGP34 –stockman pattern like the 34OT
CGP7B –5” folding hunter.
CGP8 –Like the 8OT –I don’t know if I have an example of this one and don’t see it in the pics I copied off the Camillus website before it was taken off line. I will have to check.
CGP152 – like the Sharpfinger 152OT

Tom told me the CGP7B was like the Schrade LB7, however it is more like a lock back version of the 125OT, (5-1/4”), that was crossed with a 6OT.

I believe I have an example of each of these knives except possibly for the CGP8.
After things settle down from Thanksgiving and having grandkids over, I will try to get them out next week and post pics of the ones I have.
