Show Us Your Latest Gerber Knife

In 1939 Joseph Gerber (advertising agency owner) had custom knife maker David Murphy make 24 sets of carving knife for some of his select customers. Catalog retailer Abercrombie & Fitch saw them and was so impressed with the quality of the knives they wanted to sell them. Thus was born Gerber Legendary Blades.

Show Us Your Latest Gerber Knife

Post by orvet »

My wife & I like to go to estate sale when we find a good one. We found two estate sales this weekend.
The first on Friday was a regular estate sale, and the one on Sunday was an estate sale auction.
At the auction I bought a box of kitchen implements for the Henckels steel I could see in the box.
When I paid for them I found I had actually bought five boxes for the price I had thought I paid for the one box. 8)
In one of the boxes was this little Gerber Pixie, a bit dinged up on the handle but it sure gets sharp! I used it last night on a big slab of prime rib. The Pixie cut the prime rib like it was butter and the prime rib was really tasty! ::drool::

I am liking this Pixie so much I think I will make a sheath for it to carry as a trout knife.

Dale,

Your pretty little Pixie has a 440-C stainless blade as denoted by the circled S on the bottom of the handle. Gerber started the use of 440-C about 1970 until the end of production. Your pixie will slice like a demon, but don't let it close to the dishwasher! That awful appliance will blister the shiny chrome quicker than you'll believe. Gerber made a Trout and Bird knife very similar to the Pixie. I'll post photos when I get a chance.

I gave a granddaughter a Miming and her husband ran it through the dishwasher. It actually improves the grip on the handle, but it looks horrid!
Thanks for the info on the 440C, I was not aware that was what they switched to when they changed from the Crucible Steel.

Are you speaking of the Pixie with the Armorhide handle?

Dale,

Gerber produced a model named, "Trout and Bird"; catalogue designation, "Tb". I have never seen an example with other than Armorhide handle finish so speculate the model probably came to the market in 1970. The knife is slightly larger than the Pixie, and is actually nearly the same size as a Miming. The Tb has a swedge ground along the top of the blade and a gutting spoon incorporated into the point of the handle. The photo illustrates the relative size of the Pixie vs. the Trout & Bird.

I just found a scan of a 1974 Gerber brochure picturing the Trout & Bird knife.

Thanks for the info Mark. ::tu::
I had not seen the Tb before. I like the handle better for trout than the Pixie. The Armorhide and the longer handle should be easier to hold.

The brochure is awesome! If you have more that are scanned and want to share them, I would love to have Bryan set up a place where we could post them so people could refer to them.

Dale,
Give me a couple of days to go through what I have. I'm thinking maybe we could post a selection over the decades that would illustrate some of the major product changes. Plus, with some of the actual knives for reference.

Nice one Joe! ::drool::

The Gerber Paul Knife was made from 1977-1986. I just checked sold listings on eBay and they are typically selling from about $150 up as high as $440 and I think one NIB went neat $500.
That is a rare and highly collectable find. Nice score! ::tu:: ::tu::

Parrish Trout and Bird.

Now I'm looking for an original Gerber Trout and Bird. Got my eye on one that's perfect. Rusty and crusty, just right for massaging

MUD,

If you want a trout & bird to use, buy a Miming with a blistered handle for a few bucks, buff the handle smooth, grind a spoon in the end with a Dremel tool, and paint it with Krylon texture paint. I've remodeled a few this way, and they work out great. I painted one bright green and often lay it on my table at shows. It gets lots of comments.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I present The Round Table.
It ain't "mint" , but it's mine! For as old as it is, it's in better shape than me.
Complete, NO rust, all original and all there! My first kitchen pickup, and it most definitely will be used and passed down.
Thank you Mr. Dale for your words of wisdom, I was gonna gitem anyways, I just wanted encouragement. :D
The LST is in cause, well if ya gotta ask, you wouldn't understand. Got a bargain on both, and I mean BARGAIN!
Thanks again Mr. D for your infinite wisdom.

One small boo-boo, other than that it's very minty.

I have had the yellow Gerber EZ Out for about 15 years. It will cut rope like nobody's business, the serrations are just crazy sharp.
Gerber EZ Out a.jpg
Gerber EZ Out b.jpg
The black one I got last week, it has S30V steel!
I am not sure if the yellow one is S30V or not but it really holds the edge and stays sharp.
The black one even stays sharp even cutting up cardboard boxes.
