Post by steve99f »

Picked this up at a flea market today. My wife was afraid. :) I actually have a use for this and would like to know what these are called. I'm using brush axe for the time being.

I was going to post a picture but my sizing won't fit. A picture is worth a 1000 words, this tool has a 3-4 inch wide straight edge, like an axe and then ends in a hook that also has an edge. It is attached to a 36 inch handle such as would be used with a maul or axe. Any help would be appreciated.

Is there a photo of a similar knife on the internet that you could use that might fit? Maybe you could type in what you think it's called and see if any pictures like it come up?

Thanks guys, yeah, its an older version of those tools. The hooks is somewhat more pronounced but is essentially what you have found. SAw the same at Lowe's and somewhere else. The blade is mounted off the side of the handle like an axe rather than on top of the handle as the newer tools are made.

mountainad82's picture is a brush hook (also called a bush hook, ditch blade, ditch bank blade, or ditch blade axe).

Thanks Jerry. I saw some calling these billhooks too. Puts one in mind of ancient weapons.

It does, doesn't it.

Like with a lot of things, I think what they're called depends on what part of the world you're from.
