Show off your Maher and Grosh knives

William H. Maher and Emil Grosh started the Maher & Grosh Wholesale Cutlery Co. in 1877 with a goal to sell high quality US manufactured cutlery globally. The original business dissolved in 1988, but the brand has since been resurrected.

Show off your Maher and Grosh knives

Post by espn77 »

I've been waiting to post my one and only knife that goes into this forum. Since the proper thread hasn't come up, I'll make my own. Roger will be able to give more information on this knife but the covered backspring is unlike any other whittler I've ever seen. Cool knife IMO
Still has a faint etch

Neat whittler. Do you have a photo of the backspring? The 3 blade shown below has a covered back spring. It was made by Miller Bros for Maher & Grosh

Levine's Guide calls these "surveyors", a fancy derivative of the cattle knife. Maher & Grosh called them "Colorado Stock Knives". There are some variations of the pattern from different manufacturers. These knives are longer and skinnier than others. Queen makes one of the shorter and fatter versions of the pattern that were made by companies like Valley Forge and others. I really hope that the long and skinny version of the pattern gets rebirthed by GEC for the new owners of the brand. Nobody currently makes it.

As you can see. Only the very end of the spring protrude from the covered liner.

Very nice. Thank you for the photo. Here's the covered spring on the 3 blade Maher & Grosh "Colorado Stock Knife". A 2 blade Maher & Grosh "surveyor" and 2 blade Robeson "surveyor" are shown next to it for comparison.

Your correct, the R100A has a covered back spring. I'm looking at them both now and they function exactly the same.

Here's some info from Bernard Levine when I asked him about captive springs on Maher & Grosh knives....
The reason for a closed back with captive springs is to simplify assembly.
Also, the center spring rivet moves up and down with the spring, and will break the handle covers if they are on too tight. Eliminating that center rivet removes that weakness.

Over the years there were many patents for closed back pocketknives, with and without captive springs.
Remington 'Dollar' knives are junior size stock knives with the whole frame and bolsters made in one piece, stamped and folded up.

They are marked PAT APPLD FOR, but Remington never did get a patent for this... at least not that anyone has found yet.

Joe,I don`t know. That pattern was in their catalog for yaers. They Had a 34 and 35 pattern which was the same size. The 35 had double pulls and a crest shield and the 34 had single nail nick and no shield.I`m sure yours is one or the other. You see changes to the knives along the years and they didn`t seem to change the cuts in the catalogs.

The GEC website under "Production Schedule" shows a #78 Maher & Grosh Yankee Whittler as next in line but no drawings are shown.
Is this the correct thread to ask about the new M&G knives. So far all knives posted are vintage.
