Advertised as just a Buck knife. 503 on tang does appear to have a dot stamped to the right.

The dot indicates the change to fineblanking. It's from 85 to very early 86.

I agree the dot indicates a transition, with other models the dot can indicate a number of different transitions just depends on the knife! I have to many examples to list.
