Re: Old Cattle Knives
Nice knives Lyle. They look like schrade based on the bone, but old schrades also have distinctive blades and swedging. Those features are just as important in determining if it's schrade as the peachseed is especially in the cases of schrades that used handles other than peachseed.
There's also the overall "look" of the way it's built that has the schrade touch. This is hard to see on internet photos but in person it's easier to tell.

I'll play along at home. Going left to right, my guesses are Yes, No, No.wlf wrote:Are these Schrades?
Re: Old Cattle Knives
Correct Jerry. I had a Holley with rudimentary jigging like this too.
Schrade came later in Manufacturing, I know they borrowed or hired Empire’s design or engineering on their farmers jacks.
Left to right, I’ve confirmed the one on the left is a Schrade, the next is Ulster then Southington.

Jerry... you did better at this game than I did...
Many employees "played musical chairs" between the different companies and been commonly shifting between Conn. and N.Y. factories since the 1850's through the 1920's. Back then a big part of your value was your knowledge and experience. If you knew how to make a certain pattern a company may few or no one else can make, they were more apt to hire you and perhaps at a higher rate of pay. Not like today where you are required to sign all kinds of legal papers saying that any knowledge you gain from a company is theirs and therefore you can't use it if you work for the competition.

Re: Old Cattle Knives
I took a photo of my best cattle knives the other day for the schrade section. Three early schrade walden 856's, an ulster jr that is practically identical to the 856's so I consider it schrade made, a schrade cut 8566 in pearl and a schrade cut 8173 "full size" 3 5/8".

Seein' some real beauties, fellers!
I will say I prefer having the extra blade instead of a punch, but that's me.
Someday I'll own one.
Some....day.... *sigh*

A pair of imperials from 1936-52, almost twins. The long pull main seems to be more common on these than the nail nick.

Two equal end junior cattle knives. Shapleigh HDW DE 3 & 1/4 inches closed and a Keen Kutter 3 & 3/8 inches closed.

Re: Old Cattle Knives
Two stunners Lloyd ... You think the Shapleigh was made by Empire? It sort of has that look of Empire quality ... and the Keen Kutter is awesome - looks about minty to me with lovely bone!!

Here's one you don't see every day. A pearl Atkinson with nice thick scales, fairly well used and no cracks. I just might carry this one for a while. ____Dave

Re: Old Cattle Knives
Thanks for your nice comments Lee, Steve and Paul!
Lee, yes I think the DE was likely made by Empire. I know many DE were made by Schrade but this one does not have any of the four different styles of Schrade jigged bone—certainly not peach seed like many DE Schrade made folders had. Empire made a lot of DE folders at least early on so this could certainly be Empire made
Paul right on about your comment on the Schrade

I use a lot of various old knives that were already pre used, but if they have the factory edges using it is off limits, sometimes exceptions but usually not.
