GEC # 97
Re: GEC # 97
Fyi: I was attempting to buy the same knife that you thought that you actually bought when I lost out.
I usually can make a purchase via PayPal in about 60 seconds.
I just didn't get started fast enough.
I had planned to buy the one from KSF
and then compare it to the one that I have enroute from Circle A and then to keep the one that I would have liked best and sell the other.
KJ: do you have any mammoth ivory
knives that you would sell?

Re: GEC # 97
Stephen, thank you for advice to: buy it/inspect it/sell it if not happy. It is what i needed to hear and what i have done.
With the slow internet and time checkout completed as deciding factor i am at a disadvantage when demand is strong.

Re: GEC # 97
I received the 97 stag today that I "bought blind" off of eBay from Circle A Knives.
I'm very happy with it.
Nice, fat stag with lots of character.
Sides match fairly well.
Fairly easy pull but I'm good with that.
Nice transaction.
Good service, beautiful knife.

Sorry but I've never learned how to post pictures. It has been explained to me several times by members here but I just can't figure out how to do it.
Thanks for your interest in viewing it, however.

Monk:
Thank you for your thoughtful offer.
Having read that KJ didn't have any mammoth available, I bought a
Tuna Valley Cattleman # 538 from Frank's. Anyone interested in checking it out can view
it on Frank's site.
This retiree is financially tapped out for now.
I hope all is well with you and yours.
Happy Easter.
Best,
Stephen

John i like stag too. Nicely hafted, not too thick but just thick enough to feel good in hand.

Got my Stag #97 today and I am very happy. I think the stag is fantastic. To me, it is the best of both worlds, while it has a lot of character, it is also fairly thin. The pull is pretty good too. It snaps to half stop, to open , and to closed. For the cherry on top of the sundae, it also came with a button. My pictures diffently don't do it justice. Here it is:

Nice one Larry!
Got my last of the 97's, yellow rose, really find it attractive, has a fair amount of white in it.

Re: GEC # 97
Very nice stag knife Larry and it stays slender, no fat 'tummy'. If my inbound stag is close to as fine i too will be happy.
And John your Yellow Rose looks stunning. I want one ! just like yours.
Other than some with a bit weak spring, GEC has done a super job of fitting & finishing these knives.
We should try to send a group "Thank You" to the GEC employees because they really put their heart into making these 'just right'.

Re: GEC # 97
Here are my four GEC #97 Allegheny Hunter knives. Very nicely made & finished knives. Thank you to all the GEC workers who put their energy and dedication into these.
Couple of comments. The Tidioute Maroon Linen Micarta is darker than i expected. Looks black in most light situations. I would have preferred a Linen Burgandy Micarta to differentiate more from the ebony knife.
The Yellow Rose has zero closing snap. I hope flushing the joint will help bring some snap. Has anyone else received a similar Yellow Rose 97 ?

Roland, my 97 cherry knife was like that but flushing the joint fixed it right up, lot of black gunk came out.

Re: GEC # 97
I just flushed the Yellow rose joint with WD40. Nothing came out. When i dried the liners there was a very slight gray on the cloth, likely a tiny amount of polishing dust. I oiled the joint. No change.
No snap to half stop, either way; no snap to open. Snaps to closed weakly after manually closing to 90%+ of being closed.
I have emailed dealer asking if i can return it.
Very rare for me to return a knife.
kj
Edit to ask: after a thorough flush with WD40 is there any point to hauling out the compressor and blasting air into the joint ?

Lucked in to one of Charlie's SFO's, beautiful knife, love the big shield. Get well soon Charlie!
Re: GEC # 97
Gorgeous knife! Love the shield and how they straightened out the edge. I'd have bought that one...but the other 97's didn't do it for me.JohnR wrote:Lucked in to one of Charlie's SFO's, beautiful knife, love the big shield. Get well soon Charlie!
