Camillus 72! Or What's In The Mail? (Conclusion)

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Camillus 72! Or What's In The Mail? (Conclusion)

Post by New_Windsor_NY »

Well, the mystery is solved. It arrived yesterday and yes, it was the knife in the pictures. Not the knife that was described.
So I did get a nice looking 72. Great snap on all 3 blades. No wobble on all 3 blades. The 3rd blade actually opens with no problem. Anyway, the pictures are below. Just gave it a quick cleaning. :D ::tu::

Congratulations. It's a little later than I guestimated from the seller's pictures. The handles are Delrin® instead of the earlier Brownstag®. It's pre-'76 because the handles are pinned. Rub a little machine oil (3-in-One or similar) on the handles and that "Delrin haze" (my term) in the pits of the jigging will disappear like magic.

Thank you for the oil suggestion. I'll give it a try, when I get some. ::tu::

Just some WD-40. Would that work?

I forgot I had this old can of Marvel Mystery Oil. It seems to have done the trick.
If it looks like there is some "Delrin Haze" left on the handles, it's the lighting.
Thank you again. ::handshake::

The price, which is on the side of the can, is 75 cents.

How long since you've seen a can of this? It lists "cutlery" in the list of items it can be used on.
Sooooooo technically it has something to do with knives.

From Wikipedia: "Marvel Mystery Oil is a product of the Marvel Oil Company, founded by Burt Pierce.[1] It is used as a fuel additive, oil additive, corrosion inhibitor, penetrating oil, and transmission leak stopper and seal relubricator. " Now we can add "knife handle restorer" to the list. :lol: Interesting history. Look it up on Wikipedia.
