A Father's Day Tribute - Things I Learned Because of Dad
A Father's Day Tribute - Things I Learned Because of Dad
I wrote this for my dad for Father's Day in 2002.
My sister read it at church that Sunday for my dad because I didn't think I could make it through.
My sister did a good job reading it though.
My wife and I are planning on going to visit mom and dad tomorrow, Father's Day.
Mom's not feeling well enough to the church so we will go down and visit with them.
Mom and dad are both 89, both will be 90 at the end of the year, mom in November and dad in December.
Next week on June 26 is their 70th anniversary. I spoke with them this evening on the phone and they were in good spirits, looking forward to our visit tomorrow.
Things I Learned Because of Dad
I learned to tell the truth......
Because Dad always did.
I learn to work hard and provide for my family.....
Because Dad always did.
I learned to serve others.....
Because Dad always did.
I learned how to fish.....
Because Dad taught me.
I learned how to face challenges.....
Because Dad did.
I learned how to overcome great obstacles.....
Because Dad did.
I learned to go to church.....
Because Dad always did.
I learned how to pray.....
Because Dad always did.
I learned how to forgive others.....
Because Dad always did.
I learned how to love others.....
Because Dad always did.
I learned how to love my wife.....
Because Dad always loved Mom.
I learned to be a good father.....
Because Dad was.
Thanks Dad.

Very touching. Sometimes I think my kids are lucky. They won’t miss me half as much as I miss my dad. He was a hell of a guy. I’ll never measure up. Lol.
I would have liked to have met your dad. Sounds like you had a good one.
Happy Father’s Day everyone !

Great post Dale.
I sometimes think of my dad during touch times I have had in my life. What would he do or
more importantly say to me? I have been a grandfather now for over 10 years. I think I am
becoming more like my dad every day. Not a bad thing.
My dad very seldom ever got mad. He always tried to see the best in every situation.
Maybe in a few more years I could get closer to that.

Re: A Father's Day Tribute - Things I Learned Because of Dad
What a different world it would be if we could all have had fathers like Dale's father and if we had all followed their examples. I wrote down something our pastor said this morning in his Father's Day sermon. I don't know if it was original with him but it makes a similar point as Dales wonderful writing: When you teach your son, you teach your son's son.
What a big job it is to be a father!
To honor my Dad, today I carried his old "needle nosed" Schrade Walden 896K all day, first to church then all afternoon in my old cutoff jeans.
In August "Pop" will have been gone 40 years. I still miss him. Sorry, Dale I didn't mean to hijack your post.

Re: A Father's Day Tribute - Things I Learned Because of Dad
We had a good trip down to visit my parents and wish my dad Happy Father's Day.
As you can tell from the cast on his left arm he is still recovering from the fall he had two or three weeks ago.
We had a good visit, told some of our classic fishing adventure stories involving dad and I and my best friend Paul. It was a good time.
My sister came over and my wife, sis and mom visited for a while and then we all visited together. We talked for about five hours and as you can tell from the picture we had some good laughs. Mom and dad both still have their sense of humor and that is really awesome.
This afternoon My wife, Alyson, took this picture of dad and I. Obviously we were having fun!
I hope you all is good Father's Day as my dad and I!

Re: A Father's Day Tribute - Things I Learned Because of Dad
Thanks for sharing that moment with us Dale. I noticed the refrigerator door looks like ours here, i.e. covered from head to toe.
Re: A Father's Day Tribute - Things I Learned Because of Dad
That is true, mom had always covered the refrigerator with kids art work and other stuff. My niece and her family live in the main house dad built there. Mom and dad live in the apartment next to the house. There 4 Great granddaughters that live next door and one great grandson. Mom is well supplied with refrigator art!
Just last week my grandson had his first baby making my dad and mom great-great-grandparents!
