An old usage of the word I believe; toilet had to do with most aspects of personal hygiene. Included would be manicure and trimming hair.

Here is an example of a toilet knife. Nowadays we call it a “grooming” knife. This one is from the late 19th century most likely.

Among the blades and tools are a nail file/cuticle blade, a toothpick (made of tortoise shell), a mustache comb, a button hook, a corkscrew (for opening small bottles of cologne, perfumes or medicines) and an earwax spoon. ::woot::

We still use the word toiletry to describe things associated with hygiene. So think toiletry knife.

 I'm sure if produced today it would have an OSHA warning label. I'd hate to see what you'd have to do to tell one in Kalifornia!

Thanks y’all! Definitely a historical piece that provides a glimpse into how folks lived in the late 1800’s. And the cutlery workmanship is amazing. Everything still works as it should. ::tu::

BTW, Webster’s defines “toilet” as “the act or process of dressing and grooming oneself”.

Sounds like the word toilet is older than what we call a toilet is.
