Thanks KJ I'm real surprised that no one has picked up on that S294 the only one I've ever seen...composite handles though...not bone

S294 now gone. Is the "S" for "stainless".

I have no idea ...thats how she was listed in the E supplement and why it was called a 294 instead of a 293 doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'll take a stab at it - I don't think the S is for stainless or stagged or anything else. The S294 reference is from Sargent's and I think the picture in the book is probably Doug's knife and the model number got added during the editing process. My money is on that knife being from the sample room. Since they included the text 'no lower bolsters' maybe they were thinking S for shadow? If Schrade had that in production I think it would have gotten named something more like 290 or 296. Any of the 290's numbers not being used would have been the likely choice. When they took a 293 and put a brass shield on it it became a 291, etc.

Or it's a S294 because Schrade likes to keep you guessing. Either way - that's a sweet trapper!

jxr1197..I believe you are a lot closer to the facts than I was. There have been a lot of knives that have shown up that came out of the sample room and that knife could well be one of them as it had no tang stamp. When I was visiting Herman this spring he straightened me out on the term "Lunchbox Special". Folks are using that term to refer to something a worker put together at the plant and then liberated it by carrying it out in their lunchbox. The term actually comes from Schrade allowing workers to take knives home with them to work on...in their lunchbox.. When you brought the finished knife back, Schrade would pay you for the work...it was a way for the worker to earn extra money, hone their skills which benefited Schrade, build pride and loyalty in the workforce and cut down on theft....a happy well paid workforce doesn't steal as much.
