HSB Barlow with different scales

Post by J529A »

I recently bought an HSB Barlow pattern number 9701 on eBay. The scales were listed as bone. However when the knife arrived I realized that one scale was bone and the other was wooden. I don't believe that this particular pattern came with bone and wooden scales. I assume that the wooden scale was a replacment. It is a very nice replacment and is an exact match to the bone scale. I did see a pattern 9700 on ebay and both scales on that knife were bone. I know it's unlikely but is there any chance that pattern 9701 came with hybrid bone/wood scales? I have tried to find a listing of pattern numbers for HSB knives without success. I know that HSB contracted a varitey of knife makers to manufacturer their knives. I have attached the photos below. If anyone has any information on this knife it would be greatly appreciated.

It's a replacement scale. Apparently one of these scales broke and they replaced it with wood. They did a nice job of matching the color but, it's still a replacement scale.

Love the looks of the bone!
Did they advertise as bone/wood?
If not, and there were no pics, I'd probably be a bit miffed.

But that's me.

Definitely home replacement job, with the wood replacing a broken bone scale.

Ditto what everyone else said, definitely a re-handle. The companies back then used either cocobolo or ebony on almost all of their wood handled pocket knife handles, and neither of those is on your knife. They also never did a different material on each side for consumers, or in my opinion for salesmen either. You could find beat up HSB with decent bone handles to make it right.

eBay will allow you to return the knife for a full refund. Item not as advertised.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I knew it was not right when I saw it. I've already done some cleaning on it so I can't send it back. The listing photos did not show the difference. I don't think the seller had any idea what he was selling. I guess I will just try to sell it on eBay and get back some of my money back. Thanks for all the responses.

You can still send it back after cleaning it. Does not really matter whether or not seller was aware. Because this knife has been altered it has no collector value. It's value now is as a reasonably attractive older knife to use, worth $20 perhaps. If you paid considerably more than this you might want to get your money back.

Thanks Joe! I contacted the seller and he agreed to a full refund. I told him the knife had been cleaned. I think it's worth more after I cleaned the blades.
