New one...........

Post by knife7knut »

Picked this up at the local flea market today for a buck. I think it is an abalone knife.Plastic sheath has a drain hole in the bottom;handle is a press fit into the sheath.Blade is rounded on the point and has no edge.Tried Googling the name with no success.

I found it on google. It's a "finishing knife" used by roofers.

Seems it is designed for spreading roofing mortar, not cutting. I myself felt like it was some kind of rope knife. Blunt tip would work well in that application Watch this video and you'll see that very knife in action. I'd love to see if such a knife has good enough metal for being sharpened. Seems they're not that expensive.

I thought it was a divers knife. As in SCUBA diving.

So did I Joe. The sheath is plastic ans has a drain hole in the bottom and the knife handle is a press fit into the sheath. The blade looks like a couple I have that were used to pry open abalone shells.

I'm wondering; is the blade thin and flexible or thick?

My micrometers are in the shop but using a 6 inch metal scale the blade appears to be approximately .125 inch at the top and about half that at the bottom. It is NOT very flexible such as a spatula or palette knife.
