Old Case shields
Old Case shields
I thought it would be interesting to show all of the different Case shield styles that have been used since the W.R. Case era. This is all of the different styles that include the "CASE" name on the shield (at least the ones I am aware of). I also believe that all of these shields had the raised Case logo. Oddly, even though the raised letters have an air of more solidity and permanency than the incised ones, they actually seem to be rather fragile and wear pretty quickly. The diamond shield that I have shown is incised rather than raised, however, there were some raised letter diamond shields. If anyone has any other styles it would be interesting to see them. From top to bottom bomb, diamond, arrowhead, bowtie (gimp) and oval (raised letter):
Re: Old Case shields
Beautiful collection! You've got me beat, I don't have one with the diamond shield, but certainly wish that I did! I have also noticed that the raised letter shields seem to be more worn down. I think its simply because the letters stick out and get more direct "pocket friction". Thanks for sharing.

Very nice collection, and an interesting angle on collecting.

Thanks for the kind comments, I'm hoping that someone will come up with one that I haven't seen and if anyone has one it will probably be someone on AAPK.

I can't even get close to that. You have way better Case than I do. Very nice.

According to knifedb.com, there are over 20 Case shield types. That does not
include all the subtypes in each category.
That is a lot of shields!

Re: Old Case shields
Did this CASE BRADFORD, PA. gimp shield ever have anything on it?
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Re: Old Case shields
Case used a plain/blank bow-tie shield like on your Bradford knife, so my opinion is that the shield was made the way it appears (i.e., not worn smooth). It is a bit unusual, in my experience, to see a plain shield on a Bradford era knife. It seems like the plain shields were used on pre-1914 (W.R. Case, Case Bros) knives.

Yes, Sir (6294). There are more pictures I have posted of it elsewhere on the Case forums.RalphAlsip wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 4:30 am Case used a plain/blank bow-tie shield like on your Bradford knife, so my opinion is that the shield was made the way it appears (i.e., not worn smooth). It has been heavily cleaned and there is a hairline crack on the mark side greenbone, but I (still) love this old knife.

Re: Old Case shields
Here is my "Case Tested XX Long Tail", manufactured circa: 1920-1940.
The shield is known as "Tested Block Letter". It may not be rare, however it is not common.
You will find it very difficult to find any description in any Case books pertaining to "Tested Block Letter Shield", however, our long time member "Steve Pfeiffer" aapk handle (knifeaholic) and author of "Case Knives I.D. and price guide" states on page 25 of his book: I have had the below pictured "Tested Block Letter" Tested XX knife for many years now but I forgot exactly when of where I obtained it.
Look throughout your Case Tested Era knives, perhaps you will also find this little hidden jewel.

Re: Old Case shields
The 94 is a great pattern. The shield you asked about was commonly used on the 94 patterns marked Case Bros and W.R. Case. Even though I remarked on it being an unusual shield to see on a Bradford knife, I wasn't meaning to imply anything is wrong with the knife.1967redrider wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 2:46 pmYes, Sir (6294). Re: Old Case shields
I just looked at the Bradford era knives in Sargent's 7th Edition and it appears that most of them had Case shields, there is a picture of an 06294 on page 135 that has a Bowtie (gimp) shield with the raised Case lettering. I have a knife with a raised letter shield that you can barely see the letters, I'm convinced that a few more years of carrying (which I'm not doing) would leave you with a completely smooth shield.
Nice old Case Scout shield, that's one I don't have.

Sargent's 4th has the flat bolstered BRADFORD, PA 6394 with a smooth gimp shield on Page 151.

Re: Old Case shields
I posted this one a while back and it is still for sale on the bay. There clear answers about the 3 springs but I am still unsure about the shield. I have never seen this one on a Case and don't see it in any of my reference books. So, I am still curious about opinions on the shield. Sorry about the less than crisp screen picture. Thanks and happy new year!

Re: Old Case shields
Ol' Sporty currently has a 6294 stamped exactly like mine, but his shield has "CASE" on it.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Case-Bradford- ... 3639166534
Whoever cleaned mine up might have removed the reminants of "CASE" when polishing, or it could have been pocket worn?
