Re: Clauss, Freemont Ohio
I'm inclined to agree with Steve re' the EO jack with the broken front handle; looks like a Robeson product to me.
I do not have a Robeson doppelganger to show, but the bone is fairly indicative.

Re: Clauss, Freemont Ohio
I caught one! It’s a little Clauss gentleman’s knife.
When I picked it up, it was just plain disgusting.
It was tarnished and dirty and I really wasn’t sure if I’d be able to clean it up at all. The Red Barn/Vancouver Flea vendor is kind of a buddy, so I gave him $5 for it anyway. A little elbow grease and some attention to the edge of the smaller blade and I think it’ll pass! It’s lost some of its silver plating but it’s not too bad.
I couldn’t get a good pic of the bail, but it’s has Clauss on it.
I do like my little guys!

For comparison here's my Clauss 27 pattern. Pretty sure it was made by Case.
And a Clauss whittler with Winterbottom handle covers similar to yours. Probably made by Queen. Both previously posted in other threads.

If your religion requires that you hate someone, you need a new religion.

Re: Clauss, Freemont Ohio
Thank you, Lee.
Yes, I think it's Winterbottom.
Thanks for showing your knife, Ken. I was hoping you would.
I wonder if we could pin down the maker by the style of leather punch?
These are working punches as opposed to some faux looking things on other less quality knives.
Yours appears to have that roundness to it along the spine. Very nice.
And a beautiful whittler with the Winterbottom covers. That's a beauty.
Love that small clip.

Re: Clauss, Freemont Ohio
Joe, I'm no expert on punch blades. The reasons I believe my Clauss 27 was made by Case are the bone and jigging which is definitely "Case". All the blades including the punch and can opener appear to be the same as those on some Case Bradford and early Tested era 6445 patterns. But at various times Case apparently used shorter screwdriver/caplifter blades and can openers like the one on your knife. I also seem to recall seeing a Case 6445 with a Prest-o-Lite wrench like yours.
The winterbottom bone on yours says " Queen" but Case used some winterbottom also, so I couldn't say definitively that yours is not a Case. Thinking on it, I can't recall ever seeing a Queen camper pattern either (not that that means much).
Maybe someone smarter than me can help.

Picked up this 4" Clauss Moose pattern this week, pretty sure the bone is Case Tested era, still has some etch.

Nice find John.
I think it was possibly made by Challenge Cutlery. Some of the jigging Challenge used is very similar to Case jigging, and that looks like a Challenge shield. JMO

Very nice knife John, I read recently that in 1914 Jean and John Case contracted with Challenge to supply knives to Case Brothers. By 1915 as part of the bankruptcy they both were personally liable to challenge for $2,903.03. I don’t know much about Clauss but from the responses here it sounds like Case had jobbed for them. Your knife is in great shape for its age.
Re: Clauss, Freemont Ohio
Great knife John, you know I like the big single spring double enders.
A Challenge for comparison.
