That one reminded me of this one. Went to San Francisco when I was 14 with a high school band trip to play a concert at Pier 39. After we were done they turned us loose for half the day. Loose. All over Frisco, on our own. They don't do that with high school kids these days. Long lost era. Of course me and three buddies went all over Chinatown and where ever we could find knife shops. Which back in the day were everywhere, on every corner. Well we asked for switchblades or autos all day and butt kiss. Everyone said "illegal". We even offered bribes to see if they were holding out on us. Butt kiss again. Well decades later I mentioned this to Q and low and behold he sent me this. Amazing. Exactly what I was looking for to no avail. Special place in the heart. And I know what you mean by the sound of the fire. This one explodes out and locks tighter than a drum. And I can't recall but I think he said it was Spanish or Italian or something. Could be wrong there. The tang just says "Rust Free" and nothing else. But it's truly a gem of a lever lock and love it. Would never part with it either. Too much nostalgia and meaning.Madmarco wrote: ↑Fri Feb 12, 2021 7:08 pm This "comfort" knife for today's activities is another that I can't recall if I posted it here before or not, so if it's a duplicate post, I apologize! It's a clone of the "AKC Bill De Shivs Leverletto" leverlock auto, and is 9" oal/SS flat-grind blade with 30% swedge, SS liners and lever, brass ringed bolsters and pins, removeable sex-pin and spring, and dark horn covers. An approximate weight of 5 oz.'s, and arrived sharp. Fires fast and hard, and locks-up tight. This knife has a "Leverletto" front blade etch, and unfortunately an "AKC Italy" front tang etch, although, the Chinese did stop there by NOT including the "Bill De Shivs" etch. Too bad they didn't eliminate the "AKC Italy" etch, since that would have made the knife a copy, not a counterfeit. For anyone who's interested, one way to spot a counterfeit leverlock knife, is the screw that's in the plate at the bottom of the lever mechanism on the front of the knife, since the legitimate knives have a fixed rivet, NOT a screw. Of course I bought this knife due to the reduced price, I just wish it wasn't so blatantly counterfeited, cuz it's a very cool knife otherwise! 8)WIN_20210212_13_06_41_Pro.jpg

Yep, they made folding knives decades ago.

That's one solid look'n leverlock Iman! I can't really say why I say this but, Spanish comes to mind when I look at your knife. Your story about San Fran jogged my memory back to 100 years ago when I was 17 and me and a buddy hitch-hiked to California where our 1st stop was S.F. to see another buddy. We had no idea how to find his address and we ended up in an area that let's just say tourists don't go. After wondering around for a long time we were approached by a black man in a fedora and pink Cadillac with exposed custom headers and all, who asked us, "you guys lost?", to which we replied, "yes". He proceeded to tells us that we were in a very dangerous part of town and did we want a ride to safety. WE were pretty skeptical but seeing no real other choice we accepted after discussing with each other that there were 2 of us and only 1 of him. It all turned out uneventfully as he drove us over a bridge to another part of town, all the while giving directions to where we were looking for. Young and foolish and full of p*ss and vinegar! You must have read my mind because I was definitely going to ask if you'd part with the knife, but I certainly understand your attachment to it! Re: Comfort Knives!
Well guys, I'm really scrape'n the bottom of the barrel with this one, but it's part of my collection and one that I use pretty much everyday, so here it is! It's an unmarked 4" oal single-liner folder that I reefed down the pivot on to make it a fixed blade. It had a thumb-stud, which I removed, but had become kindda sloppy as a folder so I decided rather than keep tightening the pivot, to reef it down tight only 1 more time and use it as a fixer. It's all SS/spear-point blade minus the stud, 2-piece stainless body, brass pins, lanyard hole, and brass adjustable pivot. Weighs maybe an oz., and has stayed sharp enough for what I need it for, which is opening letters, cutting string, and slicing through boxes. I claimed unmarked, but it has a "STAINLESS/TAIWAN" front tang stamp. I've had this knife for as far back as I can remember, and although I've had folks ask if they could buy it, it'll stay with me for as long as I'm here!

Great story yourself. And yup, that was exactly the part of town we were in. Strip clubs on every block, women coming out of them with nothing on trying to get us to come in, which we were too young for anyway, and knife and gun shops all over. Cracked and busted up concrete side walks, people openly in the gutter drinking and puking, beggars everywhere we went and all kinds of pimps handing out pictures of their club girls and telling us how to get there. What an education. And loved every minute of it. We were too stupid to know if we were in danger, but the place looked like bad news. Exactly the kind of place we figured there would be switchblades. How wrong we were. And the stories we told our buddies when we got back to the school bus. One of the most memorable days of our lives. Can't recall what I did last week as well as I recall that day in San Fran 40 yrs ago. Priceless.

Re: Comfort Knives!
That's the place for sure. I think it was called North Shore or North Beach, can't recall exactly. Funny thing is, on that whole trip I covered a lot of ground from S.F. to Huntington Beach and everywhere in between, but not once did it cross my mind to look for knives. I think due to the fact I'd have had to cross an International border with anything I acquired I put knives on the back burner and just didn't think about them, and, I was too busy looking for weed n' women! It's a shame really because even though autos were still prohibited in the US back in 1970, I'll bet one could go into pawn shops and for the right amount of money convince the owner to sell you 1 or some. Wish I knew then what a chore it would be to get my hands on any, I'd have made a better effort of finding some. I also had a great memory back then, but now I'm right with ya, don't recall what I had for breakfast, but remember that trip like it was yesterday. You said it all, priceless!Ivoryman wrote: ↑Sun Feb 14, 2021 11:11 pmMadmarco wrote: ↑Sun Feb 14, 2021 7:23 pmThat's one solid look'n leverlock Iman! Re: Comfort Knives!
Well guys, I'm posting late today because what started out as a wonderful day did a complete turnaround and became a nightmare! I went to the mailbox this morning expecting to see a package that's on the way from Mark at SSk, but instead there was a package that I wasn't expecting for awhile yet, and 1 single envelope. In the package was the knife I'm posting today, and it comes with quite a story. I had spotted the knife on this forum when it was posted by another member in 2018, and it was one of those knives that "ya just gotta have", so I messaged the owner asking if it might be for sale. He said that he hadn't thought of the knife in awhile and he had no special attachment to it, and that he'd look for the receipt so he could give me an accurate price. Some time passed and I hadn't heard from him, so I messaged him again. About 2 weeks later he sent me a message stating he would sell the knife for $150./shipped, along with some pictures. I agreed to his terms and we set a date to do the transaction. The day before we were to do the deal I messaged him just to be sure everything was on track, but got no reply. Suffice to say the deal fell through and I began a search on ebay for one. I found one almost immediately but the price was out of my league, so I sent the seller an offer which he immediately accepted. This really surprised me and I realized I'd need to do some financial shuffling to pay for it, which I did successfully. I paid for the order and it arrived today, much to my excitement. I opened the package and was enjoying my new knife when I remembered the envelope. I opened it only to find a "Notice of Seizure" from Customs for my package from Mark. They claimed that all 3 knives enclosed had "index flippers"(I don't know what those are either)when in fact 2 knives have thumb-studs, and the 3rd has nothing more than a nail-nic, all 100% legal to import into Canada. I can appeal their decision, which I will, although, I don't have a lot of confidence in government officials that can't even distinguish a thumb-stud from a flipper. That fact may actually be to my benefit because when they're reviewing the claim they will see that the 3rd knife doesn't even have a thumb-stud, so perhaps they will rule in my favor by realizing their agent needs some work on his assessment of knives. I'll let ya know when it's all settled. Now, the knife! It's a genuine prototype of a knife that was commissioned by Blackjack Knives to be built in Seki, Japan but never was. There was paperwork in the package from Jemmy Iwahara from Japanese Knives Direct, the same fella that Mark(SSk)deals with, stating the knife is a proto that never went into production, there were only a few made and were made by hand, and that the knife is very rare. I'm going to contact Jemmy to see if he can tell me anymore about the knife because, the tang stamp on mine and the copy from the deal that fell through is "FLT-1", but, I found another copy on ebay that has a tang stamp of the official Blackjack logo, and an asking price of US$1498., so I'd like to know why the 2 are different and who exactly built them. So, what was shaping up to be a stellar day ended up being just an O.K. day. The trails and tribulations of a Canadian knife enthusiast! Here are the specs! It's an 8 3/8" oal linerlock/SS dagger blade with stud, NS bolsters, brass liners, and black ringed micarta covers. Just a gorgeous knife that I'm very pleased to own! If you click-on a picture once it will open in an expanded window, and if you click-on it again it will magnify so you can read the paperwork and see the tang stamp!

Afternoon , thought would throw this one at you all, got it from bro in law for a gift. Take it out occasionally when riding as it’s a boot knife, which like to carry when out on motorcycle. Have sliced some Salami and cheese with it , but that’s it, it came sharp, and is holding a good edge .
Hope you all are doing well , and staying safe and warm !

Nice boot dagger J.P.! I've watched these for quite awhile, but am yet to pull the trigger for one. Every time I go to place the order I find something I like even more, so this knife keeps gett'n bumped, but I have faith in me, and I'll get one sooner or later. Perfect knife for the boot while out crusi'n on your scoot! I also spotted your tube of Q.R. oil, a knife's best friend! I'm noticing that many of the knives you're posting are models that I also like, so, as Samb1955 would say, "seems like our knife tastes are much the same"! Thanks for posting it!

I'm almost certain that I haven't posted this knife in this thread before now, but if it turns out I'm not as certain as I think I am and you've already seen it here, I apologize, there's just too many pages to go through every time I go to post to check if it's a double-up. This knife is the Helden Rand version of the Mercator Black Cat K55 humpback knives, and is 8 1/8" oal from tip to end of bail about 1/2" longer than a Mercator, although, I don't know if Kauffmann included the bail in their length/SS spear-point blade, 2-piece black aluminum body, SS pins and bail, no liners, and front tang stamp of "HELDEN RAND". Weighs a scant 2.6 oz.'s, and came factory sharp. Walks open smoothly, and snaps like a gator when it talks! These are solid knives that I don't think are appreciated nearly enough, and I really like em'!

These are solid knives that I don't think are appreciated nearly enough, and I really like em'! 8)WIN_20210217_14_10_42_Pro.jpg

great photo with those beauties in the backgroundRipster wrote: ↑Wed Feb 17, 2021 7:25 pm Afternoon , thought would throw this one at you all, got it from bro in law for a gift. Take it out occasionally when riding as it’s a boot knife, which like to carry when out on motorcycle. Have sliced some Salami and cheese with it , but that’s it, it came sharp, and is holding a good edge .
Hope you all are doing well , and staying safe and warm !

Re: Comfort Knives!
Very nice Marc. I've known a couple of people that have had both. Also I believe a couple years ago Kriegar started producing a reproduction of the Helden Rand Kat. I believe their version was around 4-1/4" closed and has a 3-1/2" drop point blade. Can't remember where they were being made, but figured it may be in an Oriental Country.Madmarco wrote: ↑Wed Feb 17, 2021 8:30 pm I'm almost certain that I haven't posted this knife in this thread before now, but if it turns out I'm not as certain as I think I am and you've already seen it here, I apologize, there's just too many pages to go through every time I go to post to check if it's a double-up. Re: Comfort Knives!
Thanks for that additional info Smitty! I've recently seen the Merc's with dark walnut and smoked oak covers, and they are gorgeous, one of those will definitely be a future acquisition, although, they're a bit up there in price. Will likely wait for the "newness" to wear off and let the price come down. Great to see you over here on this thread, and please feel free to post some of your favorites! Re: Comfort Knives!
Here you go IMAN , just got done oiling em up and thought be a good time for a group pic for you. The 72 is one nice fitting and looking piece , and the Camillus bone in the short line is some of the best in my book . Thanks for all the nice cutlery you’ve shown !! .Ivoryman wrote: ↑Wed Feb 17, 2021 8:34 pmI can't take my eyes off those Camillus beauties in the back ground, all covered up and begging to be laid bare. Wow, would love to see them all lined up exposed. Beautiful.Ripster wrote: ↑Wed Feb 17, 2021 7:25 pm Afternoon , thought would throw this one at you all, got it from bro in law for a gift.
