My latest Schrade

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Smitty, great knife. That is a particularly nice example.
KJ, I believe the light is highlighting the actual grinds.

Those were special factory orders. I'm sure I used to know who they were made for, but I can't remember who it was just now.
Here is the order card for the 898UH. Down on the bottom right side of the card you can see, C.C.C., (for Camillus Cutlery Company), N.Y.. I have a couple of the 898s and a Moore Maker knife, made by Camillus, that is the same knife with three pins, a thumbnail cutout and yellow covers.

These came in the POS exchange, but I would not call any of these a POS.

I hated to get my smartphone out, but it does take a better picture than the flip phone.

6OT. I have one of these, but it's like new and I don't carry it. This one has been carried, this one has been used. It will be put to work this weekend when I have to do some fence work. Of the LB-7 variants, it's my favorite.

752 Penknife; Carter-Traveller Company Gastonia NC. These 752s are just the right size for EDC, at 3 1/2" closed. They have wide, but thin blades that are easy to keep a great edge on.

KIMG3959.JPG
What surprised me is that a form of Carter-Traveller is still in business today, as AB Carter, still making fiber mill equipment. You'd think, with most of the fiber mills closed and long-gone, (the last one around here in existence, Jefferson Yarns in Pulaski shut down three years ago, and was recently demolished) their business would not be that good. But then again, they have offices in five countries.

Since my memory stinks I got curious and started poking around for these knives. I thought it was a hardware store order but couldn't remember. Here ya go.

This is from an old post, here on Blade Forums.

"Here is the response from Schrade on the 886UH I have just acquired.

The model 886UH was not a regular product in the Uncle Henry line, but it was a specially ordered Uncle Henry item that was manufactured exclusively in the very early 1980's (probably around 1982) for a hardware distribution chain across the U.S. that are now out of business (I believe it might have been Belknap). It was not considered to be a high quality product, as this chain was looking for a "low-end", "low-cost" item, and so it was specially made for them. There was a total of about 30,000 of these items shipped during that time, so they can be considered to be fairly collectible. I guess it could be considered to be a limited edition knife, even though it was not manufactured as such. The retail at that time was only about $18.00. There was no Loss Warranty included with these knives, but if someone did claim a loss, we still honored it.

I hope this is helpful, and if we can be of any further assistance, please let us know.

Best Regards,

IMPERIAL SCHRADE CORP."

Schrade made the 885UH, and Camillus made the 886UH.

The 886 is tang stamped S.C.C. and was made for and sold only by Kmart.
They came in a Brown Box, I will try to find a mint one in the box and post some photos.
The one in the centre, is the 886UH.

This may work tonight, and I will try later...Ken

I have the 886 and 898 UH knives as being made from 1979-'82. I've got MIB examples of both. Mine are the same quality as my many other Uncle Henrys, unless you consider their single pin construction to be of lower quality.

I don't think so....

I have always felt like the pinned construction is "better quality" than the swinden key construction.
I feel like the swinden key construction was just a way to build knives faster. (I'm not a big fan.....)
If I do repair on a swinden key knife, I always drill it out and put in a thru pin.

Just my $.02 about that.

Here’s a few that have shown up at our place in the last few weeks . Don’t know much about Schrade, just delving into them more seriously this year . Sure is a lot of nice looking stuff here .You Schrade folks have been very helpful . 4 of these came from a member here .
The 880 Kon - Kav is like new . The 863 is one had been looking for a mint example, this one came close. The little 707 w/ scissors is in excellent shape and really like how they did the bail/ shackle, not sure what Schrade calls it ! ? And the 708B is a SFO for Cadillac. It was one of 3 Caddy had done over the years for there mechanics/ Engineers / maybe dealers . There’s a Silver one ,1968 pewter 2 blade SW NY USA . That was the 25 year ,black box need to find yet . And a 2 blade 50 year ( 1935 to 1985 ,made by Anvil ) Gold plating ? This info on the Cadillac SFOs has come from a Cadillac collector in our area and some info here . If am wrong on any of it please let me know . As I’ve stated , fairly new in the Schrade end of this hobby of ours .
Take care ,stay dry ::tu::

The pined construction dose not make a "better quality" knife, it is a better construction for a knife/ tool.
Those 886UH knives were poorly made to a price, and there for a poor copy of the Schrade 885UH.
If you like the pin construction, and a knife made by Camillus the early Buck 301 is a very good EDU.
The very early Buck knives made by Schrade, [1966-68] had the swinden key stem.
Buck found the swinden system, too hard to repair for warranty.

Just in a Schrade Walden built 861 stockman with Craftsman 9514 branding. Most of the Craftsman 9514 model knives were the square bolstered 881 pattern, but this is the slenderino 4" version. If anyone knows when these were made, please chime in!

INTERESTING!!

You wouldn't know that was a Craftsman if there wasn't a blade etch.
