Ha! Those cows love that day old bread, we get it for $15 a pickup truck load from the local bakery.

Enjoyed seeing the cattle closeup. You have an unusually large pool.

Thanks, QS. Those shots from Thursday and Friday pretty much captured the whole herd, except for my niece and nephew's 4-H steers. I think there's about 35.

Wendy seems like one of those cows that would complain about anything.

Some more critters around the water trough. My wife fills it up every morning, and it is bone dry by the next morning. As you can see in the pics, it has been getting up around 107, 108 degrees over the last few weeks, and all the water holes, ponds, and tanks are dried up around here.

The road runner is very patriotic, with his red, white and blue tattoo above his eye.

Starting to see a few more dove. We have a dove hunt planned at my friends ranch on the weekend of the Sept 1st (opening day). Hopefully it will cool off a little by then.

Nice oasis pictures, Unk. Those darn crows are making a mess around my 'hood. 78° and a doe-eyed fawn, very cute!

Mike, it's been so dry around here we have fish that come to the bird baths. Sorry, no pics but I sure enjoyed yours. At least the heat makes the copperhead stay under a log.

I was at Lion's Club last night and one of the members who owns a south Texas ranch said that the catfish he caught there had ticks on them.

Haven't posted any deer pictures lately. We have seen a couple of spotted fawns in the last week or so, none on the cameras yet. The mature bucks, as usual, have all disappeared, only yearling with their little fuzzy spikes are showing up, still with their mommas. The old mommas coming by the feeder are looking quite pregnant. Spent the weekend dove hunting on my friends ranch. Got a small pile of dove. Ate some great BBQ, big breakfasts, and drank way to much beer with my best friends for over 50 years. Now I need a few days to recover.

A great 4 days! . We got out there Thursday afternoon, hunted Friday and Saturday, then left on Sunday. Us old men were dragging by Sunday.

I can relate to your statement about "old men draggin'".
Back when we were farming, dove hunting was a great social event. Lots of invitations swapped back and forth, good times. Our 1st phase of dove season used to begin on the 1st weekend of October. We always shot clay pigeons on Labor Day with my son and his buddies. That activity grew into a big deal, it became a Labor Day peanut boil and skeet shoot with 60+ folks attending. Seems like we had a hurricane one Labor Day and we called it off, never to be revived. I think Miss Joy was happy about that, it was quite a job from the kitchen side, with folks bringing sweets and keeping enough sweet tea to keep folks going.
Here's a picture of a happy little feller about 37 or 38 years ago, his 1st dove! He wearing an old nail apron to hold his 20ga. shells. He's 45 now, wish we'd kept that old Willys wagon! The wagon was traded to a brother-in-law for a super fine Winchester model 92 rifle in 32-20.
Memories are good, Unk, thanks for bringing 'em back to the surface!

We had about a dozen folks out there on opening day Friday. By Saturday night it was just us 4 old friends - and of course we all had to re-hash all the great stories and adventures we've had over the last 50 plus years. And make a few new ones.

I caught 4 turkeys walking the powerline field (there's a better picture of the field on the Train thread) at the farm today before the rain. They might have been looking for water, but there's plenty now.

A few months ago, I mentioned when the bucks first started to grow antlers, that we would not see the older bucks until later in the season again. There have been several yearling spike bucks all summer with their mommas but a couple of older ones showed up the last week or so, a six point and an eight point. It's always encouraging to see these bucks and it's always amazing to see different bucks during the rut come through our little farm.
The six point walked out from the feeder and took a ten-minute siesta on the edge of the food plot. Here is the 6 and an 8 near the feeder. Got to looking at this buck and it looks like a tick is attached to his right antler. Never knew this, looked it up and it's not uncommon for deer to have ticks on their antlers while in velvet. Hoping these fellers and some of their buddies will stay around for the season which starts on Thanksgiving Day and runs through February 2024. Treefarmer
